Curio on flywheels.......
just a passing pondering on a fri arvo.... but why do people lighten flywheels? is it to make engine spin faster? does the flywheel offer some kind of
weight to keep momentum up on motor? so if one was to lighten up flywheel on vw would it go faster speed, but not have as much grunt on hills? would
lightening vw effectively turn it into alfa?? odd series of q's but q's none the less. Please don't snikker at me if my theory is
incorrect....lol.. (no I am not lighteing flywheel, just curious!) |

your theroy is correct to me.
a lightened flywheel will aloow the motor to spin up faster but you will loose torque or the ability of the motor to accept a load without loosing
revs.
has a big effect on dirtbike motors dont know how much you'd need to gain/loose on a vw to notice effect...

yep - as you have said
A city car would be good with a lightned flywheel - would rev quicker.
A full weight if you want to do burn outs.
If you have a counterweighted crank - the extra weight "may"counter by a light flhy wheel. Same with a stroker.
A highway cruizer would have a full weight flywheel
Futue te ipsum!!!
