Is this on a 1500 or 1600 engine.. as all 1500 beetles had type 3 engines...
in my chiltons manual.. there are two different valves...
one has a groove in it... its the best.. more engine oil cooling.. the other doesn't have the groove.. they are different lengths.. you can use either.. type 1-2-3s

Springs should be between 2.44 to 2.52 inches long thats around 2 1/2 inches long..

Lee

Hi Neil

There are 2 valves in the sump on the newer cases.

The oil pressure relief valve near the crank pulley
The oil pressure contol valve near the flywheel housing
They do not interhange they have different springs and pistons
In the oil pressure relief valve you can put the grooved one from the1500s as it gives you cooler oil.

I got this info from John Muirs Idiots guide

hope this is of some use
Marc

The groove lets the oil flow thru it while the other blocks it off

My Book said by using the longer grooved piston, it will drop the oil temperature by 15F degrees... by allowing more oil to flow thru the oil cooler....

They were only used in type 3 engines ...

the book covered all engines but this grooved piston was only used in type 3 engines... I thought all engines..
just reread it.. it said all engines should have it...
My 1500 engine has it as all 1500 engines were the type 3 engine with plate where the oil dipstick went...
