My new exhaust
Hi guys,
Just fitted up a new system yesterday. Its a fully merged S & S 1.58 inch header , with the collector cut back to a full 2 inches, then it goes
into a fully merged 2.5 inch pipe into a 2.5 inch straight through muffler.
It replaces my 1.5 inch system which didn't have a merged collector, went into a 2 inch pipe & into a 2 inch muffler.
Seat of the pants so far , with a passenger, it feels as though the motor has really been woken up, it wheel spins in 1st, 2nd & chirps in third
& thats in the dry. I'll try to get onto the dyno early this week as this will tell the real story.
I also think that I'm going to have to get some smaller airs for the Dells, as I think with the bigger system it will leaning out more.
Next will be some headwork to the stock port 040 heads to see if that will make any difference.
regards
Jak

looks good jak, is it any louder with the bigger pipes?
What power was it making with the old system?
Should be a good comparison to see what it will do after you dyno it.

Hi Dino,
I was worried that the new system was going to be too loud, especially with the car being driven every day. When I looked through the new muffler
& I could easily see my muffler guy out the other side I was a little concerned. But after it was finished & we started it up we were both
very surprized. Inside it sounds the same as before driving on the street, can still hear the stereo & have a conversation, but it has a real blat
to it when u get over 5000rpm, it sounds fantastic, it just has a low rumble at idle which sounds quite good too.
Last time on the dyno it had 105hp @ 5300rpm & since this is the only change that I have made it will be a good comparison, in reality it may be
only good for 2hp or so at the wheels, but it definantly feels as though the engine is having an easier time breathing & even the throttle feels
crisper as well. Of course the limiting factor is the heads but the new exhaust will do for a little while.

Hi Jak,
I had a 2 litre bug a few years back..40x35 heads, ported and 48 dells....my mergerd header was the diference between scorching hot 4's and barely
beating them.
The crispness is the torque caused by the collector. The air accelerates through the restrictor giving back pressure yet causing a vacuum for the
opposing cylinder....
I would never use another type of exhaust again after my brief experience going from a collector(old one rusted out) to a standard extractor and back
again.
Good luck on the track...when I get the 2332 finished I may see how this green aero bug that Richard built actually stops and turns. Looks good in the
garage with no engine.

Hi Brendan,
I'm having the 4 primary pipes off the heads ceramic coated silver/chrome, but not the rest as its in the open air & it would stand out like dogs
balls.
I was going to paint the rest in Por 15 heat resistant paint. I need black though so u can't see it as much, thanks anyway. Where did u get the por
15 from, can we get it on the Coast?
I want to do my tinware as well.
regards

Jak, you have that whopping big spoiler hanging off the back, but you don't want people to notice the exhaust? Howcome? Something to do with ground
clearance maybe?

As far as my tastes are concerned, I prefer to look at a spoiler as apposed to an exhaust.

I have owned a T3 S and S header, major difference is that pipes from 2 and 4 go from the head - then turn out towards the guards then back in to the
collector.

Got the car on the dyno this morning, only got 108.8 @ the wheels, but the power is coming on earlier & for much longer. It's also running
dangeroulsy lean. I have ordered some 150 airs to replace the 170's that are in it. I also didn't use the power pulley either, forgot to change it
over.
Just as a comparison to the last dyno run to this one.
Before & after exhaust change
70hp@3200rpm 70hp@3300rpm
100hp@4800rpm 100hp@4600rpm
105hp@5500rpm 108.8hp@5500rpm
96hp@6200rpm 106hp@6200rpm
U can see it dropped off quite sharpe before.
Any thoughts comments most appreciatted.
regards
Jak

You would have to be happy with an extra 10hp @ 6200 - must really make it feel stronger in the top end ? Sounds like there might be a bit more hiding
in there too......
Plus it looks well tough too !

Seat of the pants Doug it feels equally stronger all over, but the dyno readout says otherwise.
Once I prevent it from being so lean up top there should be some more power in it as well as well as keeping it safe at high revs.
I'll go back again next week & keep those who are interested posted.
I'm also saving my coins for some 42x37 044 heads from CB. They will replace my 40x35 040's & I'll raise the compression from 9 to 10. I've
been practicing porting heads with some 40x35 044's that are going on a 1641cc that I'm currently building so I'll port my new heads myself.
When I built my mates 2110cc I set the comp at 10.1 & thats with 42x37 044's with massive ports & it's running very well staying very cool
on the track & the street. he also got 106.8hp @ the wheels with more tuning with jetting to come.
So with my stock port heads I feel there is much more to go with my motor yet, especially once I get the air fuel ratio right.

That's a fairly good improvement considering you should get a few more ponies once you get the jetting sorted

Adrian, I'm running Berg 1.4's in my 2.3, but I put CB 1.25's on the 2.1.
Hi Jon, yeh it's really nice to drive, been driving all day with the family in it & because of the tourqe theres no need to take it over 3500rpm
on the street. Notice that the power starts to curve when the air fuel gets over 13 into the lean zone. I wonder if when jetted properly , if it will
keep climbing rather then curving off?
