Desert Bug is back on line in remote Northeast WA.(Now with pics)

G'day All,
Well we made it!! Approx 4,500 ks in the Desert Splitty towing a trailer from Bendigo in Vic to Billiluna Station in remote northeast WA (180 ks south of Halls Creek on the junction of the Tanami Rd and The Canning Stock Route).
The Desert Splitty performed very well considering the load we had onboard and that it is a 1600. We averaged 18 to 20 MPG (about 13/14 lt per 100 ks) which I was very happy with. The motor performed well and after adding some Wynns oil treatment used only .75 lt of oil for the whole trip. I found the best fuel combination was Premium Unleaded with an upper cylinder lubricant, including trying Auto Trans Fluid which worked very well.

We only saw one other Kombi on our trip which was disappionting, I was expecting heaps.

Will post some pics some as soon as we get them of the camera.

Cheers, Ian.

mix with fuel.... due to leaded fuel being completly phased out you use two stroke oil to
a) slow down valve seat recession
and b) to help control the combustion of the fuel
it is best to use only premium

Can't wait for the pics!!!:bounce:bounce

When did they leave...how long has it taken???

What spares are they carrying?

A splittie towing a trailer sounds a pretty good achievement...think of how old it is....modern 4WD's break down out there....

I hope it makes the new VW mag :)

Hi,
Thanks for the well wishes, we left on Wed 9th June about midday and traveled up the Stuart Hwy through the Centre as far as Katherine then turned left and headed for Kununnura and as this is our nearest main town we stopped for a couple of days to have a look around and do the BIG grocery shop (approx $1300) as we may not get out again for 3 months to stock up again. Then we headed down to Halls Creek and left the bitumen to travel 180 ks down the Tanami Rd (dirt) to Billiluna and arrived about 4.00pm Friday 18th June, so about 9.5 days for 4,500ks.

The weather up here is great at the moment, about 26 during the day and about 10 overnight due to being in the desert.

I have a 12 month renewable contract here so who knows how long we'll be up here.

Cheers, Ian.

By the way, you really are in the middle of nowhere arent you ? Are you doing station managing work ?

good on you desert bug

Sounds like an awesome trip and a massive change of scenery from old bendigo town. We are planning a four week kimberley jaunt next year after the wet in our dual cab kombi. Travelling light will be the go for us but we will have a 120lt fuel tank and 60lt water tank for a bit of remote camping. I've been dreaming of a trip to the kimberleys for 5 years and we are finally putting the wheels in motion to be ready next year

Thanks Folks,

dubcab, keep in touch, we're hoping to a bit of tripping around while up here and the Kimberlys' are high on the list. We are planning a 100k run down the Canning Stock Route to lake Gregory very soon so will be interesting to see the looks on the faces of people travelling the CSR when they come across a Splitty comming towards them.

If anyone is coming this way drop in and look us up we'd love to see you.

Cheers, Ian.
