Hey Seagull,

The cam itself from the 1776 will be fine in a 1600. If it is used, then you have to retain the same followers...at least that was what I thought.

Is the cam used????

I once read that once a cam is broken in that it can only be used with the exact lifters that it was broken in with.
If it is new then there should not be a problem with tha stock lifters.
Are you using a lightened flywheel or a stock??? If you lighten it then you can get you crank balanced. Part of the reason VW's flywheels are heavy is to counter any balance problems.
Go to http://www.geneberg.com  and read and read the tech notes/tips on their recommendations for every aspect of building a modified engine...lots of theories and proven results. Will give you a great understanding of some of the ins and outs relating to your project.

Hope this helps,
How are the projects...the heads????

The cam number you have looked at is the part number for the gear can't tell anything from that,

The cam spec should be stamped into the end of the cam near the oil pump drive.
