Help with 60 Bug

Hi all,

I had a look over my 60 bug briefly at the weekend - it is awaiting re-work and as its not with me I don't get to see it much. I have three questions to anyone with a model like this one:

- on the tunnel, near the gearstick, is a twist-knob...what is this for?

- under the back seat, end of the tunnel....my later (69) bug has the chassis number stamped here, but the 60 has a removable plate for inspection underneath. Should the chassis number be here? What are you able to access underneath, is this the gear select assy?

- did the old beetles like this one have a battery harness assy? Mine doesn't, so do I have to make one up for rego?

Thanks....

the knob is the heater the plate allows you to access one of the gear shift bushes and no idea

1) twist knob is heater... anticlockwise is on ...clockwise is off...(I think :S)

2) chassis no. should also be stamped under back seat...

3) my 60 has a little clip structure (battery harness) holding battery in... it is not holding up to well now either... I'd consider getting a battery box for it... that way you won't have to worry about your back seat shorting the battery and will have some protection if the battery does leak... (I'm looking for one for my bug) not sure about rego laws in NSW...but mine passed okay over here..

my 61 has battery strap (harness) assembly ,you will probably have to put in some sort of hold down device to hold battery still for nsw rego:)

Of cource it depends on how dodgy your rego guy is. Mine kinda knows that it is an old car and isn't being drivenmuch, and so isn't as strick as other places...

Heh, my pink slip he only checked the belts and that was it for the interior ;)

I think the battery tie down strap was the same for all years as far as I know.

The access plate is for the shift coupler, it connects the shifter to the tranny, so if u need to pull out the tranny or the shift rod it lets u get to it easily
