Dannyboys Notch
After a lead from KOM123 i found a gem. A 65 1500s that has been sitting in a warm garage for the last 5 years. Car now drives like a dream , though
way out of tune. 1500 dual carb , IRS etc.
Car is very rust free apart from a few scabby bits , minor rust repairs to floors etc. Interior good but seats worn.
Mainly light cosmetics really. Will need total overhaul of engine , steering etc but no huge dramas.Heaps of spares included 2 full sets of early
light lenses and engine lid rack.
Plan to strip it this w'end and off it goes to the panel shop in 3 weeks time. Lucky for me this comes at no cost , mates own shop and booked in
already!!!
Rust repairs , new paint and a new rubbers and carpet all round. With seats back to OE spec.
Slam it , do all the servicing and we're off for rego shortly after xmas. Folks we have one cool Notch knocking around soon!
Photos this w'end!!!
Go the Notch !!!!!
A very happy dan:kiss

PIcs this w'end and yes it's going "Danny Style". Still got moon tacho and Scat shifter from the 67. Checked out a colour today , haven't seen a
Notch ever painted in it and have made my mind up on it! Helps me plan the rest of the car now. Keeping it a secret til it's done but it will be so
classy it'll knock your socks off!!! Car will be slammed hard and keep it's 1500 dual carb motor though i'll throw some 40's or similar on it.
I'm stoked i've found a Notch , especially an early one in good condition. Really looking forward to getting into this and hopefully we'll see a
car ready for rego in about 3-4 months.
A very excited Dan

Uhh.. stupid question coming up... Firstly, congrats on the Notch.. but I thought you were getting a company car, so you didn't need a VW, or
couldn't store a VW, so you sold your Beetle.. But now a Notch?!?
I'm obviously wrong here somewhere..

PIC,S and mad update!!
Well i started on Saturday night and now my Notch is stripped , TOTALLY ! Seats out , carpet out , interior and glass out , doors stripped , lights ,
the lot ! Just left with dropping the motor and a mega degrease and it's off to the panelshop.
I have only found 2 small areas of rust on the whole car which is great. All good round the window apertures etc.
As you can see by the photo's is pretty straight and theres little signs of any bog hidden anywhere. Good start me thinks.
However it gets better. The car really isn't what it seems. A 65 with 4 bolt ??? I was looking through the paperwork and noticed it's alot more than
i first thought. I managed to speak to the guy that spent alot of money on it and this is the spec although he was vague on some things.
L bug IRS gearbox , T3 Wagon rear drums
Ball joint Disc front end
New case and a 90.5 bigbore (1776) !!!!!!!!!!!!
How goods that! :kiss. Nearly fell over !!
He's ringing me back with cam and head specs soon. The engine is running rough now so i'm going to drop it out , clean it up , do a service on it ,
check for oil leaks , get the carbs tuned or bang on some 40's that i'm looking for.
I'm now making my apoliges to the vw world but this car isn't going to be a stock resto. The colour will be a bright Merc Silver , slammed ,
dechromed , painted bumpers ( yes thats right!! ) , silver/grey toughened sideglass made to pattern, one piece windows ( yes you heard ) , black
rear venition. Wheels yet to be decided but Centerlines / Ercos would be cool. Interior will be going a mix of grey carpet and headlining with black
seating , dash etc. Sorry to the classic guys but what can i say
Most of the money will go on rubbers and seals as they ALL need replacing apart from the F & R screens.
What with the good news i hoping the motor will be okay and we'll have a car back on the road by early new year.
Keep you posted as things happen!!!
Happy Dan

I'm sure I saw this car in at Vintage some time ago. I was looking at the wheels and they seemed to be custom or home built?

Progress!!
Apart from ripping the car apart ready for the panelshop work i have sent of the template for some of the replacement side glass. The colour i have
gone for is a mid grey tinted toughened safety glass suitable and legal for auto installation. Not too dark , not too light , very classy. I get them
back in 6-8 weeks they reckon which is okay by me. That against a nice light gunmetal grey paint will just look great i hoping. Most of my following
w'ends will be taken up by mocking up the 1 piece front windows and have a working template sorted. Alot of work getting this right and working
smoothly but will be worth it and the first time i've seen this done If anyone knows different tell me !
It's all go at the moment and i'm really enjoying the Notch and i haven't even had a decent cruise in it yet!!
Oh yea the wheels , what are they?? They are polished , slotted mags , 4 bolt ( IRS and Discs) . Can't make up my mind on them to be honest , like
them then i don't. I'll polish them up , they are new anyway get the car finished and see what the go is. Unless someone makes me an offer!!!

More pics and update
Really good w'end on the Notch. Dropped the motor out and is now nicely sitting on a stand ready to be stripped down to the long block , cleaned ,
serviced and painted!! Need some 40's for it so i'm on the hunt for some.
Totally degreased engine bay , box , rear arches etc. Now has a nice thick layer of grey hammerite on it now. All of the bolts holding the guards have
come off no worr thanks to a weeks soaking in wd40. Even the extractors have come off no problems!!
Need some extractors aswell!!!
Plans are to clean offand seal all the pan and inner heater channels and thats the last really dirty job i have to do thank god! Shit forgot about the
motor!!!! Oh and the underside of the pan!! Ahhhh
So i have my work cut out but all is planned and i'm ahead of plan after this w'end. Do have a massive list of parts required and hopefully some of
it i can pick up here off the forum. Here's part of the list!
Extractors
Carbs ( 40's)
Door seals
Bonnet and boot seals
Rear 1/4 window rubbers ( non chrome )
Body beading kit ( black)
Rear light body seals
This is top of the list only but the most urgent.
Few pics of the mahem called my garage , does look alot better now , honest!
Happy spanners

Well it's all go in the garage , especially as i've now made it a decent place to work with a few creature comforts. As you'll see fron the links
i've now taken off all the guards ready for paint. The week of soaking all the bolts worked and i had no problem in taking the guards off. Theres a
few tiny holes i've found , (rusted screws !)but apart from that no rust apart from the O/S outer sill. Nearly all the dirty jobs are done and
already the cars being undersealed , painted etc.
As i'm geting a little carried away with things it won't be ready for paint for a month or so. Whilst the cars away i have an interior to sort and a
motor to play with among a million other things! The rebuild won't take long hopefully.
I have sorted my carbs and some decent extractors and the odds and sods i need are located and available. Having a really good time working on it and
just so glad it's as solid and straight as it is. Biggest headache is the front end which has had the front valance knocked in a abit and a repair
thats out of my league. Just more $$$ to find !
Going to be a great ride when it's finished , just hope i can put it all back together LOL!!!
Happy spanners
