I am pretty sure the 20b would be impossible to register and besides it would make the car very tail heavy, not to mentions the power and torque twisting the car in half

Subies bolt up with an adapter and flywheel, they are cheap and plentiful, powerful and heaps of people know about them. Also, they are the sort of motor VW would most likely have ended up designing if they'd stuck with boxers. They take all the good bits and of VW boxers and improve on them.

I love the 20B RE:thumb, just to expensive $4700 front cut. Will fit straight in a kombi though.I chose 13BT in my kombi because I have two
type 3s and two spare 13BTs on the floor:kiss
400hp is enough!!!
What will the conversion be done on?

a 20B is a 13B with a 3rd rotor.

I think someone may have been having you on. It would cost more to add a 3rd rotor to a 13B than it would to just buy a 20B.

i know it would cost more. which is why i thought it weird.

but you cant go on cost. because after all. it costs a lot more to make a vw engine as powerful and reliable as a jap engine. but people still do it :)

no. i think they meant a 1.3 litre triple rotor motor.

a 1.3 triple rotor engine would be 100% custom made.

A 13B has 654cc rotors. 2 rotors gives 1.3L = 13B. 3 rotors give 2.0L = 20B.

Don't believe everything you see or read on internet forums.

A 20B upper inlet manifold and throttle body are used but the lower section does not fit because my engine is shorter , so a custom made lower section was fabricated. The engine uses the front mounts with a custom cross-member leading to standard engine mounts"

no offence, but wouldn't it have been alot easier to put a 20B in? ;)

71superbug, you said this, "it costs a lot more to make a vw engine as powerful and reliable as a jap engine."

sorry, but a VW (cased) motor of the same size/power wil never be as reliable as a jap motor of the same size/power. The case just gets all unhappy and moves around causing everything else to where prematurely. :(

However, the aftermarket alloy cases can be an entirely different story, mmm...maybe I am splitting hairs, sorry :o

Unfortunately, you are right about the cost...:cry

I KNEW I SAW THAT ON A WEBSITE SOMEWHERE. it is unique. but what does it have going for it? maybe hes taking the F1 theory. many chambers little size. hehe.

anyone know of any advantage to doing the triple rotor 13b? :S

and yes. vw motors seem a tad too much to really be worth it.

unless you maybe grew up with them. but i sure didnt. :D

I'm looking forward to someone making a kit to bolt subie heads onto a VW case.

Hint, hint....;)

Have to be cheaper than aftermarket race heads for VWs :duh

There will never be an aftermarket race head for a vw that will be cheap...as it is after market. Subaru heads on their own would be just as expensive...and even if we made them aircooled? you would have to port them and change lift and valve size etc.

A guy called Jim Fueling( I think) revolutionised vw building by making a big power out of vw motors but no one knew what they had in them.. He died and all his stuff was auctioned off before anyone who knew about him found out. One of his 2.2 litre motors which made 400hp(no turbo) was on ebay and on of the guys on the shoptalkforums got it and pulled it down for all to see...had modified harley heads(4 valves) and hilbourne injection. They looked like a subi head.

I stand corrected.

What a weirdo. The cost of the custom eccentric shaft would've been more than the cost of a 20B (unless he sacrificed quality).

I've seen custom made quad rotor 26B type motors to copy the old Le-mans rotary cars which were banned. Mazda originally called the quad rotor engines 13J-M, which didn't make alot of sense. I guess they realised it made no sense as the next evolution of the quad rotor was called the R26B.

So custom making a quad rotor would be cool, but a triple rotor is a little pointless.

quad rotor bmw...
