Diff lockers for VW's


Out of curiosity I emailed a 4x4 accessory mob asking about diff locks for VW cases, and got this back:

I believe we can get a lockright or similar for these diffs, They sell for $899.
We don't have in stock, but place orders with the states every month.
Let me know what you'd like to do.

Well if you wait a month or so I will tell you if one of these work in a buggy or not . Some say yes and some say no so I am just going to try and see once and for all. I was told when i bought it though that they are not making the VW ones anymore but I guess this could have changed. I know i got it a fair bit cheaper then that price but it was old stock they had on their shelf at. http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/

It was teh lock rite one ( from teh states) and I scored it for $599 but it took them 3 weeks to find it on their shelf and They reckon it cost them that much. It was a bit of a on the side deal as when I got the reciept it said I paid full price for it which was about 850 I think from memory.

After driving Brad's Hilux for the week, which has a detroit style locker in the back, I'll say that one would absolutely suck in a VW.

In the Hilux if you pull out of a T-interestion and attempt to accelerate it will lock. In the hilux it simply means squealing the inside rear tyre, in a VW it would mean serious understeer and no turning.

Also on sweeping corners it would try and make the car run straighter, such that when you put the clutch in to change gears it would suddenly steer tighter until you let the clutch back out. It would be more noticeable in a VW.

That's my 2 cents :)

I agree, though the claim of the "Lokka" is it does not operate the same as a detroit, ie, it won't lock at low differential speeds such as cornering. This is their claim anyway. :)

A mate of mine is right into 4wds. He says it depends how the diff is set up. If it's too tight, then it's noisy and annoying. Probably similar to what you are talking about.

The other thing to consider is that, hiluxs have absolutely no weight in the back. VWs do. Surely the weight would help the diff to be smoother as well?

Well as i said before I will be able to tell you very soon if they are shit or good as mine is in the gear box and ready to go into the buggy very soon. I guess at least then we will know for sure without just guessing.

just talked to two different 4wd places about the Lokka. They said it's not very progressive at all and quite noisy. The teeth are straight cut as opposed to ramped as in the lock-right. Unfortunately they don't make lock-rights for VW anymore either. :(

I have mine installed into a reco 2L box and it is in the buggy waiting for the rest of it to be finished. I am hoping it will be on the road around mid January as their is a lot of work to do yet. And it has a lot of different mods that we will see if they work when the time comes.

If ya'll would be willing to buy a locker kit from the US, I might be able to help you out. Gary Miller of Miller FI in Oregon is working on a locker kit using a Synchro diff, modified tranny case, and an engagement mechanism of his own design. It would be under $1000 US, less depending on how complete the kit is. Let me know if you are interested, and I will let Gary know.

A M8 of mine has fitted a Lokka to his Hi-lux.
No, their not progressive in any way but no true locking diff is apart from an LSD really.
It does clank a bit during very slow tight cornering and will promote a big slide in the wet due to the fact that this design drives the inside wheel only when "differentialing", (Ie: cornering) with a big footful of horsepower but this is to be expected.
The inside wheel will try to spin and the diff will lock up.
Apart from that he is quite happy with it as a day to day driver and reports no other dramas.
Just a little more care in the wet.

so have we worked out the cheapest option for this? if you were to buy one this would replace the need to have to get an lsd of superdiff right? so all you would need is one of these and some HD side covers and you have a box that can handle some faily good power? i know they are ilegal to drive on the road, but my mate has a locker in an r32 skyline thats on the road, but its really noisy, but then again the vw is alot noiser than the rb20 in the engine department so i don't think you would even be able to hear it. i would be really interested in knowing how they make driving.

also, are these the whole diff? or just like an insert into a stock diff, cause then you would still have to buy a super diff and in that case be cheaper almost to get an lsd :) im looking at this seriously because although illegal, im looking at getting the 2 drive wheels going. can make life easier when trying to drift. any feedback would be appreciated.

No not the entire center.

The parts are placed into the diff cage where the sun gears once lived.

The Lokka diff is an embarrasingly simple design and works well as far as a locking diff is concerned.
They work kind of similar to an LSD except that all the power is sent to the inside wheel when cornering. The outer wheel simply freewheels.
If the inside wheel trys to turn faster than the outside wheel, the center locks the axles.

They workwell enough as a daily driver. A bit dodgey in the wet tho.
