couple of questions
Hi,
Just had a few Q's.
I have a black 58/59 beetle that im currently doing some rust repairs on.
It is already painted in black 2pack (i think its 2pack because its quite glossy and hard) by the previous owner. It was painted over the original
paint (a beige colour) although it seems to have adhered to it pretty well. there isnt any cracking or peeling. Is painting without going back to
bare metal a necessarily bad thing?
The paintjob is pretty mediocre as was the prep work, there are some parts where you can see brush marks through the paintwork. Is there anyway to
buff these out or is it more likely that it is in the prep work and will need to be resprayed?
I am doing the lower pillar/heater channel and will probably need to touch up the front quarterpanel. I wanted to know if it is possible to touch up
2 pack using acrylic as I know that your not supposed to spray 2 Pack outside a proper booth.
Is it possible to spray 2 pack in a garage with the right equipment? i.e. respirator, heat lights etc. or is it just a waste of time?

You would need to touch it up with enamel if anything - enamel / 2 packs dont play well with acrylics as far as I know.
as for the brush marks, you could try to rub them out with some 1500 grit paper, but if they are under the colour coat, you run the risk of rubbing
off the high points of the brush marks, leaving primer / beige streaks......
Tough one.
I'm no expert though - there are others on here that know heaps more about painting than I .

It's quite alright to paint over the old paint as long as it's in good nick. You can paint over 2-pack with acrylic as long as you take all the
shine off with fine paper or a scotch cloth. And you can spray 2-pack in your garage if it's clean and you use fast hardner. You'll still get some
shit in it ,but you can polish that out.

To test if its 2pak or acrylic try rubbing a small section of paint with thinners...if it comes off its not 2pak.
For a quick respray you can wet block rub the whole car with 600 then 800 and then paint the black. You can then blow on the clear coat.
