Obsessive VeeDubbing

Skewy and I had a great weekend planning the ultimate squareback rod - channelled, chopped & raked, smoothed and frenched. We just couldn't help ourselves.... :D:D:D

Dave, I would like nothing more than to take a section out of the roof and lay the windscreen back properly before welding this sucker up. Unfortunately I don't have a MIG, and I'd probably need a Porta-Power as well to do it right. If anybody wants to supply these, I'd be happy to finish the roof chop for them.

The 'plans' were for it to be chopped and raked, channelled and smoothed - full on rodding style. Unfortunately I don't have the equipment necessary and won't have in the foreseeable future, so I was forced to come to my senses and abandon the idea. I decided to cut it up anyway, just to see where to cut next time. I wouldn't have bothered with a picture window, Skewy and I had our hearts set on a panel van, but with flush panels, not recessed like the factory ones. :)

Now what would look good as well would be to make the quarter windows, One really long one!!!!! With angled door pillars, and make the "big" quarter windows go up and down!!! How nice that would be!!!! Oh yeah, and a Full length slide back sunroof!:thumb

Cheers N!

The front pillars would have angled back considerably more had I been serious about the project - the roof at the front still needs to come down about another 3 inches for a total of 4". I took 4" out of the 'C' and 'D' pillars, so you can see the the roof is not sitting flat yet. I'd need to cut a lateral strip out of the roof to shorten it to allow the windscreen to lay back fully. :)

Door glass was going to be one-piece Plexiglass, rivetted solid to the door, flush-fit with openings cut into them racecar style.(what did Skewy call them?)

The roof was going to stay solid, but I was going to smooth the tail-light openings, with rear lights frenched into the rear pillars and roof. Headlights and front indicators were also going to be frenched in. :)

Anybody want an abandoned project for free?

Oh yeah, we were also going to smooth the bonnet ridge, number plate mount, and the horizontal ridge just above the bumper, fill the bumper-mount holes and roll the front valance for ground clearance. (spare wheel tray is sitting on the ground)

We did think of the Caddy tail-lights, but this was going to be a cheap rat-look rod on a VERY tight budget.

the panel van wouldnt have worked with the low roof. You'd get bum prints all over the mirrored roof.

so exactly how much alcyhol was consumed during this 'project'.

Yeah, sorry mate. It will be the first thing I do when I get my own shed, just for you. :)

Heather didn't appear to be too impressed when I told her the plan - she doesn't need to say much, I just know. She's always accepted my VW obsession, but this was pushing things too far, especially as I'd already promised to get rid of the square!!:o Needless to say, I came to my senses shortly after you left!

I figured since it was going to the tip anyway, I might as well make the most of it, so I went the hack as a practice run. Now I know I can do it, and I'll know exactly where to cut next time. This one isn't actually too bad, but a couple of the cuts aren't in the ideal position. I'll have another go at the fastie before it goes, because the roof chop needs to be done differently on that one, and it's fun anyway. Cheap entertainment!! :thumb

Actually, fastbacks don't make good convertibles, I've seen a few and I don't like them. I'm thinking of a chopped and channelled fastie mock-up. I might Baja it first though with the 33-12.50 tyres off my truck. :D
