What were you doing to the fuel pump? What car and what type of fuel pump is it?

have you taken the starter out to check it? sounds like the little gog that throws out when power goes to the starter, then pulls back to get out of the way from the fly wheel might be stuck in the out possition.
might just need some lube and a fiddle?

try turning the motor over a little then have another go, it could be worn teeth on the flywheel.
a way to check the health of things under there is, with the ignition on (normal running position), the wire to the coil off & THE CAR OUT OF GEAR (we don't want you dead) climb under and touch a screwdriver across the bolt on terminal and the push on terminal on the solenoid, if it throws out properly the prob could be from voltage drop in the connections between the battery/ignition switch/solenoid.
i also new people that used to have to get under thier cars every now and then to give the solenoid a light tap to unstick it.... usually at the most inopportune moment.

Has the car been changed over to `12 volts???

this probably means that the starter is still 6 volts...
they do work for some time but usually wear out the drive gear due to the high power - High Voltage....

You may just need another starter motor....

they should be easy to find..... every beetle had one....

best of luck

Lee

I suppose its a bit difficult to get the pump fixed when the engine doesn't start....

Pour a small amount of petrol down the throat of the carburetor and it should kick until it runs out...

or- look down the throat of the carburetor and You should see a piece of pipe sticking out slightly...
this is the fuel bowl overflow pipe....
see if You can pour some fuel into this pipe and fill the fuel bowl in the carburetor up... depending on what carburetor,
and how large the fuel bowl is- the engine will run for some time......
best of luck

Lee

fuel probs

yea I posted this prob in the "big crash 05" so i never got any replys~

engine runs for a little when i put some fuel in the carb~

I cleaned all the jets etc & fuel squirts when I pump the accelorator~ the lines are clean(cause I got a mouthfull of fuel from the hoseline 2 fuel pump) thats where i think my prob is no suction.

I took the top part of fuel pump off & cleaned it had a lot of shitty surfacy rust bits in it~ unblocked hose line nozzels~

didnt help! do I have 2 dive deeper & clean more or do u just replace it? can I visualy tell if its shot?

thanks all~Sime

Lotta people recommend electric fuel pumps. Be careful if you go that route though, pressure and all that.

Good luck dude. I can commiserate with you regarding fuel problems. Aargh!

Sime,

I have to ask this first - are the lines to the pump installed the correct way?

Ok, next, the valves in the top body of the pump have fine springs under the fibre valves - these sometimes break. This makes the pump inoperable.

How much did you pull apart?
Did you remove it from the engine?
Was the diaphragm in good condition?

4 steps;

1/ go to VW shop
2/ buy new fuel pump (brazilian is fine)
3/ put fuel pump on
4/ start motor ;)

BTW, if the pump diaphram is holed the motor will be filling the oil up with fuel. Check your dipstick, if the oil is very thin and smells like fuel that's ya problem. If you do this first and this is it then go to step 1 as per above.
:)

Oh BTW, if the oil is full of fuel you will need to change the oil too.
