Turning off my beetle

I am wondering if it is characteristic of a beetle to cough and splutter a little when you turn the ignition off - if it's not normal can anyone suggest what might be wrong with my beetle?

Thanks. Just had a read of the thread and think I need to do a couple of things - get a service and use premium unleaded for a while. The engine smells pretty strongly after a long drive - someone suggested burnt oil. I will see how I go anyway. Thanks for the tips.
