Wiring Hassles - continued......

Is there a website with VW Wiring Diagrams?

I've spent 2 hours trying to work on my wiring (attempting to follow the Gregory's manual where possible) and made it worse than what it was....

You have to be careful as Volkswagen made a different wiring diagram for different countries....

The USA wiring Diagram is Totally different to the one used in Australia...

What wiring Diagram do You Need? I may be able to help...

the early ones are simple....

the later ones are not too bad....

the later ones for 1303S [1973>] onwards are Terrible...
a different type of diagram....

Yes, a 1961 Beetle had a simple wiring system....

There is one there [vintage Bus] from Rob in Adelaide for an early Beetle, taken from an Australian Owners manual....

I'm not sure whether the colors are mentioned though....
I think thats what He wants....

After more fiddling late last night, I really need some help with this one. As for the year I need, well I have worked out that I am pretty screwed there. Yes its a 61 chassis but the buggy wiring has been 'put together' by the previous owner, probably to his own design.

I know I have a starting problem but I will work on that seperately. What I would like to do is get guidance on the basic dash lighting, anyone good with basic electrics?

- I can do the speedo illumination OK
- I have indicators working OK but the indic light on the dash is going berserk.......sometimes starts flashing on turn of key (lever not used), other times doesn't flash
- Cannot get Gen or oil light to light up with keyturn
- Fuel gauge not registering
- Haven't looked at high beam light yet

As stated, all headlights, tails, indicators work OK, I just need to work on the dash lights.

It has an aftermarket fusebox (8 slots) and all of the wiring around it seems pretty new. The loom which appears doesn't have all the gucci VW wiring colours so I need to know how to test for certain things, eg:

- how do I tell the wires for the oil and gen lights, out of the loom? Where should they go before into the light?

Any volunteers out there, who are good with these basic electrics, that I can U2U with these questions? I'd like to work on the dash and maybe have it wired correctly by the end of the weekend.

Thanks.....

The latest

OK, heres the latest from tonights fiddling....

- got speedo illumination OK
- got high beam light (blue) OK

- wired fuel gauge, but unsure of one wire - diagram says to take a wire off the gauge resistor to the flasher unit? I don't know if there is any fuel in it so don't know if the thing is working (but no fuel so no moving), or not working

Current Issues:

- gen light, oil light, indicator light

- gen light - straight from regulator to gen light? Can't identify which wire it is from the loom

- oil light - from oil sensor to light, again can't identify correct wire out of loom

- indicator light - huge hassles here - indicators work OK but wiring at flasher unit and dash up the !@#$......is there a basic wiring configuration that someone can send me for this?
- indicators go though a metal box (relay) that high beam goes through too?

Any guidance?

Do you havea multimeter with a buzzer and long leads..... hook it to the wire in the engine compartment then you can identify the wires under the dash one by one.... EASY

Bought a new multimeter, dunno how to use it yet though....

Had more success, all I am missing now is the oil light, I believe the wiring up front is OK, and it appranelty comes from the oil sender at the back......where do I find this beastie, what does it look like?

that depends on car a bit. i have found that the US bay kombi wiring is very close to the Aus one (has worked for me most of the time)

even easier then the multimeter is the pens u get with the light in them. i have a good one of those and it has helped me greatly i tracing wires. my bus's wiring has been hacked almost like a buggies (it has had an engine transplant and about 1/2 a loom of wiring to go with it) and in soem cases i have found it is simpler just to run a new wire rather then playing with invisible other wires for hours on end.
