Buggy Exhaust Ideas & Suppliers


Hi all,

With the buggy being close to ready, I am now pondering an alternative exhaust to the standard bug exhaust it currently has. Yes, you've all told me how ugly it is!

This is probably good timing as the exhaust on my 69 bug is showing signs of disintegration and I can apparently use the exhaust off the buggy for it.

So....not having seen too many buggies in the flesh, can anyone help with pics of some good exhaust setups, and maybe some suppliers of them? I talked to a few exhaust shops yesterday, even though they all deal with 'specialised' or 'performance' exhaust systems, they don't do anything for VWs.

I am not after anything that will increase my performance, make extra gurgling noises, or be able to sing in a key of E. Primarily I'd like something that does a normal everyday job, but be a bit shorter / more compact than the standard exhaust. $$ will decide how I go with it.

Probably best to rock into your local VW shop and tell them you want a buggy exhaust. They should have access to some or some good advice.

hokay,

i have cheap dual cannons from Micks. bloody noisy but a mate has chopped a set up and made a steel baffle to quietnen them down. also someone else has simply chopped the mufflers off once the glasspack has broken down and welded on quieter mufflers from a muffler shop. $40 each. this is what i will prob do as someone wants the old canons for their off roader.

aparrently cannons cost you power- mostly at revs. i dunno as mine runs pretty rough mostly (poxy untraceable airleaks).

good thing about cannons is excellent departure angle and excellent motor access.

4into1 are ment to be better power- esp at revs but usually compromise motor access and departure angle. i used to have 4into1 but rust and arguments with the ground saw and end to them.

whatever you get, make sure the headers go around the rocker covers not under them and make sure it is qyuietish. nothing worse than drawing the attention of the law as if they want to, they could prob find 10 defects with almost any buggy... i know if the copper was is a bad mood, my defects list would be baad, none unsafe mind you, just niggling little stuff.

Cannons suck for power and driveability. Any VW shp should be able to get a decent 4-1 high reise buggy exhaust. Yep, good points about the clearance under the pushrod tubes. ALSO, make sue the pipes don't run past the rocker covers - you need to adjust valves every now and then!

yep, i shoulda said get the ones that go around the sides of the rocker covers that leave room to do your valves. mine leave room enough but a special bent screwdriver makes it even easier.

those COR ones look the goods. 4into1 for clean running, headers over the top of the rocker covers, highish muffler for clearance and tight upper bend for dizzy & motor access.

fit single port only or twin? is all that exposed hot pipework the reason behind those full cover engine cages?

because you have a J&S i would recomend to go the cannons. As you have no cage, you would need to get one made if you where to go something like the thunder bird exhaust and other header style exhausts.
with the cannons, you just stick to the pully wheel cover and you are still legal.

Hey, Well if you like sound and look for LOW cash you could do what I have done, Go to your local motorbike wreckers and ask what they have out the back in the way of crome exhausts from harlys and the like...

Many of them have only a little bit of damage or even as little as a scrach and there put in the bin..

Look at ones off a bike about 30% less engine size (even less cuz they have much higher rev)

So get a place to make the headers to hook up the pipes and your away, the pipes have baffles in them already.

Hmmm Legalitys you may need to look at as well but I have had no problems as yet...

And well it all cost me about $200 all up with new studs seals and clamps...
Oh and I have a Sudi engine and it has improved my running quite a bit..

I don't know about loss of power as I haven't tried anything else, but my little buggy is drivable and the cannons are nice and simple. They are quite noisey, but at least I have easy access to the rocker covers.
