what exhaust and why?
there have been a few simlar threads posted but its time for me to make a final decision what i am going to go with on the 1600tp buggy...
i am a fan of twin cannons. for access and visual appeal reasons... is there any conclusive evidence and experience that these cause the rumoured
problems? your experiences with them?
i also like marine boys setup with motorbike pipes... |

I have cannons on mine, they are ok but a 4 into 1 system is the go if you want to get the most out of your engine. I think a 4 into 1 sounds better
too.

Thinking of using cannons on the Manx we are re-buliding.
Toying with the idea of using motorbike mufflers.
The 4 into 1 systems I have seen all hang out the back to far for my liking. Have to extend the barwork as well to cover the hot bits.
If it wasnt for physics & law enforcement I would be unstoppable....

4 into 1's
why cause I hate telling people I told you so.........
Cannons are cheap but rob you of power and drive comfort. Bike muffler are just that, made for bikes and should stay there.

guys, the more noise ya motor makes the less comfy the car will be. don't put cannons on it, they are just plain offensive and your neighbours will
hate you too.
You want something nice and quiet that helps the motor produce as much torque as pos. Don't worry about power, the weight loss of a buggy makes a
1600 feel quick anyway.

loud n offencive?? with the right coice of muffler you can get all the back pressure you need n still stay quiet (if you really want).imo it is the
lack of exhaust speed that robs you of pwr
personally i love the sound of cannons negates the need of a heavy, highly thiefable, and expensive stereo system go horizontal 4 sounds

I stuck with my twin cannons simply due to the fact that 4 into 1 looks ugly. It sticks out and really theres no good looking way to have any four
into one system from what i have seen. + i like the noise. and i accept the fact that i am not getting all the power out of my engine that i could but
i prefer to loose that .5sec or so down the quarter and keep my baby looking good

The buggy has some extra space behind the engine, so hopefully looking at merging the pipes behind the engine (somehow??) and still have the dual
exhaust.

jonnyb once told me u could use a commodore merge from the 2 pipes and they match up perfectly with the twin cannons if u want to put a quieter
muffler past that.

Hi peoples.
The exhust on my BAJA uses the front part of the cannons from heads to where they join then they made a system so they joined up for a 4 into 1 and
still use the same short engine cage that the cannons use.
Look at the picture below it could be done neater but it works ..

I've had to look at the exhaust question recently....and I'm staying with a standard beetle exhaust. I had a lot of hassles in town finding anyone
that would make an exhaust for a buggy....and the couple that would have said that not only with the cost be high, but it will take them a lot of time
to do and the system will be noisy.
And.....when the first rego check ádvised' me that my exhaust noise was 'borderline' with a standard beetle exhaust, I can't afford to go any
louder. I can't justify paying big bucks and losing the car for a long period, just to have a louder car that won't pass rego!
I checked with some out-of-town places (interstate) and although some of the prices were better, they all admitted their system will be louder than
standard. So.....bug exhaust for me!

I like the idea of a four into one system behind my engine, has anyone ever attempted this?
I just dont want any ugly pipework covering my beautiful crome engine
(main reason for not going four into one and keeping the cannons on) i also dont have any rear bar work on the back of my buggy to cover any of the
pipes

hey phantom. if your buggy has previous rego papers/engineers to say it was legal once (not legal with a shot pan etc now from scratch) then it should
only have to pass noise regs for the year the chassis was made. is this not correct? a 4 into 1 thunderbird exhaust should be under these limits. give
custom offroad a call see what they say about the engineers problem.

Yeah I've looked at a lot of this, cos I really just want to get it on the road as a basic car, not for huge performance, etc.
The car has not been rego'd previously as a buggy and therefore I have to go through all of the engineering aspects from scratch.
However the exhaust issue was picked up by the rego inspectors, not the engineer. Also I reckon a 4 to 1 system would protrude almost as far as the
standard syste, - protrusion was also an issue.
In short, I'm doing what I can to get this on the road as simply as possible. Down the road I might decide to put on a better system, etc, however at
the moment I'm pulling in the belt as the project cost has already blown out.

I am a fan of the 4 into 1 thunderbird exhaust to.
That was until i experienced the exhaust a mate made up for his own buggy.
This is just as nice on the ears and doesn't effect its performance in anyway.
Check it out.

I have bascially the same set up as above, except i have two hotdogs instead of the mufflers, so is it true that i am not getting all the possible
performance out of my engine even though the pipes are equal length? If so does anyone know how much power i could be loosing?

On my buggy I've always preferred the cannons for a couple of reasons, 1) Definitely the looks and 2) there's less to rust or at least less areas
where salt laden sand can accumulate. On a 4 into 1 there's always that spot where the pipes come together that's a right bugger to keep clean and
whenever I've had them that's where they've fallen apart. On the cannons though I've always had a bracket welded between the hotdog muffler and
the pipework from 2 and 4 cylinders to stop any flexing when bouncing around. After 17 years with this buggy I've found the cannons to last about
twice as long as 4 into 1s, this may not be a priority to you but it is to me. An alternative to get around this would be to get a 4 into 1 and have
it hot aluminium sprayed which would make it last longer. As I say this is only my opinion based on experience.

Not enough to worry about . As for noise bloody hell it's a VW they're always noisy! No as I said my priority was durability, the difference in
engine performance was negligable, it may be more noticeable if the engine was a 1916 with all the bells and whistles but as a standard 1600 I wasn't
too concerned. Now I've got a type4 it's all irrelevent to me.....unless someone makes dual cannons for one

the engine in the yellow one in the pics is a 2.2 ltr type 1 engine.
the exhausts do not effect its performance in any way at all.
Manxed69 on here runs a 1600 and dual cannons on his manx and doesn't have a problem with them.
