T3 engine and box

Hi all

I am looking at slowly rebuilding my type 3, slightly overboard, but just wanted some info first!!

I have a spare type 3 engine, about 71, and just wanted to know how big, power wise, the engine could be bored out to or would it be cheaper to buy a bored out new case. Also looking at turbo later on maybe!!!! Also I would like to go EFI with it as well. Any suggestions to a setup that could be done with it???

Also I have a 73 Type 3 box. The box needs to be rebuilt but i just want to know if it would cope with a bigger motor and whether or not I would be able to get it converted to a 5 speed??? Would any other boxes be suitable if the type 3 box is not good enough??

Any help with the following would be much appreciated!!

Thanks

Kieran

biggest off the shelf cyl ~ 94mm
biggest (ots) crank ~86mm?

that's about 2387cc.

there's a Gene Berg kit to add a fifth gear to a vw gearbox.

how much are you spending?

Hi

Am was planing to spend somewhere between $2000 to maybe $3000 on the engine and box

But I will have to try to figure out some pricing as well to get the car repainted and also other things I want to do.

All up I have about $5000 to pend on the entire car

My engine rebuild - my engine, rebuilt - cost me just on 2.5K. I already had the twin carbies, big exhaust and distributor etc etc. You may be able to but a second-hand complete engine for similar. You would be better off, in my opinion, getting the body looking good, tuning the engine you have (plugs, points, leads, oil, tappets etc) and saving for a big engine later
That might give you some ideas...?

A trushift box is a good idea. It uses a longer shaft and still fits the standard gearbox length. However the input shaft needs to be modified to get rid of the add on bit at the end. The output shaft does not need to be modified as the drive gears are not mechanically connected with the extension piece. The new trushift gear housing is very strong and the ratio of the 5th gear is lower than the standard 4th or around 1:77, aprox, and I am not going to take my gearbox apart to find the correct ratio either.

I would like to use the engines I already have but both of them are a bit strange. I have a wrecked 71 t3, the engine did run, but badly and seemed to leek oil. The motor I am using is a bit funny. I think its a new case stamped with the original engine number but for some reason the correct timing marks don't tune properly, instead I have to line up with a blue marking made on the fan housing!!!

Any way, thanks for the help and I'll figure out the best path

Kieran
