thinking of moving to Australia..!!

Hi everyone,

How's it going? Bit of a confusing time for me right now. I'm an English guy working in Sweden, and I've been offered a job in Melbourne.

I was actually on here a couple of years ago becasue I was applying for a similar job, but I didn't get it. Well, now I've been called up by the boss of the design studio of a rival company, and he wants me to start asap!!

I'm partly excited about it, but partly very scared at the same time!

So, I just wanted to say hello again and see how everyone is.. as there is a very good chance that I could be moving to you country very soon!

Would be cool to hear back, as the facts about how great your VW scene is would definately help lure me over there..

bye for now,

Luke.

What do you want to know.
The scene is getting bigger over here but I must admit it is about 5 years behind Europe, the shows are a lot smaller as the population is about the same as inside the M25.
The shows are also a bit of a bitch to get to depending on where you live.
I live in South Australia and we only have 2 shows per year, I would have to travel about 10 hours each way to go to a show in Mebourne and double that for Sydney.

Cheers

Don't worry about thinking too much, just buy your (one way) ticket and come on down. The life here is as good as anywhere..
Try to bring a couple of euro/pommie 23 window kombis in your luggage with you.

I guess that I just wanted to know about the life over there.. if there is anyone that has been to europe for a while, how does it compare? Is Melbourne a friendly place? It was such a long time since I went that I am struggling to remember.

what are the vw clubs like in the Melbourne area? how about the bars? good nightlife? is it expensive to rent an apartment? Those kinds of thngs...

and, last but not least... can someone please teach me to surf...??!!!! :D

G'Day Luke,

Doing design you will never be short of work over here, there is loads of agencies that will kill for Euro experience. Throw your wagon in a container and get on down, shrimps are waiting on the barbie!

I don't know if it would be any help but if you need any advice on decent Sydney based agencies give me a shout at hello@kevinotooledesign.com

hey Luke
Melbourne is friendly and fun - very multicultural which is fantastic and there is definitely something for everyone- that applies to nightlife especially- i'm a pub sort of girl myself but there's squillions of different nightlife spots to suit your style

rent isnt too bad (cheaper than sydney) - depends on what level of quality you want and if you wanna be on your lonesome or sharehouse - you'll get very good sharehouse close to the city for around $1oo/week - obviousy more more if you want a one bedder apartment (say $150ish).

cheers

I would be looking for a 1 bedroom place for myself. Could you recommend some areas for me to look at please?

I've heard that St.Kilsa and Brighton are nice...?

depends on if you're looking for something close to the city.

I like Richmond, North Fitzroy & Carlton/Brunswick (lived there for 5 years through uni which was brill)

probably also depends on where your work is going to be?

I love Melbourne. Most culturally aware city in Australia, and often feels like you could be somewhere in Europe. Lots of music venues, little bars, main public transport is trams, Also about 3 million people there I think from memory. Correct me if I'm wrong..... I want to move there myself (from Sydney).

Melbournians are the most friendly people !!!! Much more friendly than our Sydney friends (everytime I go to Sydney I nearly get killed !!!!)

I would go to the inner city, costs a bomb but sooooo worth it ! Richmond, South Yarra are really cool. Only problem is that car parking can be an issue in the inner city, but if that doesn't matter then go for it

Yeh Melburnians are friendly. I have a skewed view but mum (from Perth) can't get over how friendly melbourne people are.

Anyway - Elwood is a great place to live - beautiful beachside suburb (bay side that is), leafy tree-lined streets, and a little community feel. Heaps of apartments, it is right next to St Kilda and if thinking of living this way, I would recommend Elwood or East St Kilda over St Kilda itself.

Melbourne has heaps going for it - great nightlife, art galleries, shopping, cafes & bars. If you love eating out, Melbourne is the food capital (sorry Sydney and everywhere else). But it's not the sunniest/warmest city in Australia!! Oh well, at least it won't make you so homesick (lol) - but don't get me wrong - we have been having the best weather lately.

That's my rave on Melbourne - let us know what you decide....

If you are looking for loads of sun (without the humidity!), plenty of design work (though not too much agency stuff) and very cheap housing (national average), then this is the place....Perth, Western Oz.

VW scene is much smaller than the other coast, but we are cosy! And if you don't mind driving 3 or more days to get to the good VW events, then this is your place! I've done the Nationals twice from Perth to Sydney. Vic is nice place, but way too cold and wet for me. Sydney is cool (I lived there for 4 years) but very expensive. QLD...Well...FNQ is cool! ;)

I have lived overseas for almost 5 years (UK, Europe & the US), but I came back to WA. Give me Perth....Much more relaxed and the beaches are way better...I do miss the snow though!

Sound like I work for the Dept of Immigration!

Come and have a gander...
