Radiator setup + crossmember in a '77 bus


Hello,

As I've posted before, I drive a 77 camper bus with a stock 1600. A couple of days ago I bought myself 2 EJ 20 engines (no turbos though) for 350€ (you can't buy a used vw 1600 type 1 engine for this price!). The motors are in very good condition. One is tuned and just rebuild (flowed heads with larger valves, performance camshafts and dual Webers 40 mm) it has about 200bhp and the other is completely stock with 60000km on it.

I think I'll install the tuned engine, cause the "Johnny's" with their "tuned" BMW's and Peugeots here in my town need a lesson...;)

I have also the adapterplate and the modified (lightened) flywheel so all I have to do is put it in...
But I also need a crossmember to support the engine in the rear. Does anyone has some pics of that? I live in Belgium and I 'll have to make it by myself cause buying one in Australia or the US is not an option...

Now the radiator setup. I was thinking about installing 2 radiators. A large one with 2 fans under the bus (like the custom offroad rad) and a smaller one with a fan in the aux. battery place... Would that be a good choice?
I think the tuned motor will run a bit hotter than the stock one...

I've had no dramas with the rad. underneath my bus.
the rad. is from a hx holden v8 and fits nicely between the chassis rails.

I will first see how low it will be ... I planned to lower my bus, so when it is too low, I will have to make a modified one... I read that there is also a shop in Germany that sells suby conversion stuff, so I can also order it there...

@ vwtyp2: Thanks for the pic! So you're running one radiator? Is it placed in front of the bus, so behind the frontbeam?
How did you support the motor in your bus? Can you show me a pic af that plz?

yeah, just one rad. with a big thermo fan on the back.
it is in the middle of the bus, so just in front of the rear wheels.
I've got a custom made engine support that is bolted to the chassis rails.
I don't have a pic of it, but I can take one tomorrow and post it for you.

Thanks again for the pic.
Do you know the size of your rad and from which car does it comes? I'll think I'll use one of a vanagon (it's 568 x 438mm) with the great fan or two smaller ones on it. I think it 'll satisfy. I'm not living in a hot region though...

ah, another EJ20 VW in Belgium :) I've ordered the shortened sump from bug@5speed in Germany, I'm on MSN ( tomvandenreijt@hotmail.com) if you want more info on the conversion

How does your ignition work with the carbies on the motor?

What happened to your ECU?

What are the intake manifolds off?

There is a distributor on the left side on the back of the cilinderhead. It is with an electronic unit in it (Hall-type). I'll post a picture of it.
The whole wiring loom isn't neccesary when you use carbs and a distributor, so there is no ECU anymore. The only thing that you need is a "15", an "earth" and wiring up your alternator.

The manifolds are homemade and it is TIG welded alloy...
So I don't have injection, but I also don' t have the wiring loom to look for. It 'll also run not so good when the motor warms up I think...
It also seems like the motor looks pretty stock :duh.

In the future I will make an injection/ignition system for it, but an aftermarket DTA one. I'd like to work with different programs like: Sprint (lots of Hp's @ high revs), sport (lots of torque in the midrange revs) and economy (good mileage).

It's not standard though... It's a Duccelier (France?) dizzy and a Bosch "electronic unit":duh

The cilinderheads are flowed and they have a performance camshaft. So on the left camshaft there's a cog wheel for a distributor. I think it's build up like the older Suby engines. I did not build the engine. I bought it like this from a guy that I know well, who did some tuning for cross vehicles (like sandrails and stuff like that).

A dizzy is the best option for this motor because the compression ratio is higher than a stock one. If I would use the stock ignition system, I'll always have the "high speed knock" which destroys the engine because the timing is too early. There' s also no knocking sensor on a EJ20 engine...
So now I can take it to the dyno (in my school:) ) and I can test and adjust the ignition timing...
The motor is also more agressive, has a better trottle response (if you have the right jets and venturis) and sounds like a breath taking giant who is running a marathon...:thumb
I don't need a reversed manifold, I don't need to figure out the wiring loom and the motor fits nicely into my bus and it looks stock...

There are a couple of disadvantages like more gas consumption, poor running when it is started and when it is cold and tuning the carbs after every 10000 km...

I didn't put it in yet...

I had some exams, and guess what... I passed :dork: I also painted my bus

So first there will be some vacation and some quality time with the girlfriend (all with the stock 1600 in it) and then I' ll start the conversion.
