Non-VW Engine Conversions in VWMA

Well here it goes, JVL dummy spit:vader...Ive picked up a the new VW mag,its improving everytime but still lacks one quality....Why isnt there any non-vw conversion section happening in this book!....There seems to be a feeling amongst fellow VW-ubbers doing a conversion that we are not getting a look in this mag.Is it because we change our vee-dubs that they are not class as a vw with a subie ,rotor or a v6 up up its arse!!!...As far as iam concern there are some smart geared up bugs that deserve a mention or look....What do the rest of you think or can our VWMA Editor help us on this topic.....Ive posted this comment here for a reason and we all know why.....JVLRacing:repuke:pukenn[ Edited on 10/8/2005 by jvl054 ]nn[ Edited on10/8/2005 by jvl054 ]

Why don't you just approach Craig and ask? I'm sure he'd be accommodating to all types, as it is all types that make our VW scene. At the moment he may be focusing purely from a purists perspective, but that may only be part of the initial marketing strategy to ensure people get hooked first, and then open up to other ideas once the magazine has an established base.

umm there are ... I don't read much but I am pretty sure that Jak's is in there as is Kimm's from Indian. There have been a few articles and stuff as well.

I have no idea where you are coming from here.

If you list what Non VW Powered VW re out there then list the air cooled ones I think you will see why the mag is mainly air cooled.

I know for a fact there will be more in the future once people get their stuff sorted.

Hey while we are on water cooled VW's does your actually get used ? Reason I asked is cause I saw it at VAlla and it looked real cool but I have never seen it drive or get raced.

Cheers,

Brad

mmm, i'd forgot about the feature on Kimm's ute. But I still think JVL has a point. They're rarer than hen's teeth.

What about Wes' baja for instance?

Or dare I say it, my car? I sent him an email some time back. He tol me to send some pics. I did so and haven't heard anything since. If it wasn't up to scratch, all he'd have to do was say so. But it was good enough to be mentioned in the Ultra VW letters sections, along with a small pic.

Most of the cars seem to be standard or just have nice paint and wheels. [yawn] All of the really interesting cars only have a few pics, while the boring ones have 20 or 30.

put your car in HOT 4's or fast Fours etc.......................leave the mag for VW powered, with maybe one or two "feature" hybrids.

How many are really out there anyway????

Thats right, there aren't very many at all, maybe Reub could have his featured, it's definantly worthy. I think the Aussie mag is great, it's early days yet for it. I'm sure Craig gets sent many requests to have their cars featured, I would pressume he will have a backlog of potential feature cars. Besides, if your car has been featured in another publication, I don't see why u would want it in another.
I'll keep getting the Aussie mag no matter whats in it, just to support it & keep it afloat, it will all be good in the end.
Craig the editor is one of the nicest vw people around, I'm sure he takes all advice/suggestions/criticisms on board

umm, featured no, UltraVW just replied to email I sent and looked at my webpage coz it was in my signature.

Just for the record, I looked at the new edition of VWMA today on the way home. I thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt. What a disappointment. :o

Yet again the the main feature car had a "detailed"(read chromed air cleaner) stocker in it. It said the big stroker was "future plans", yeah whatever. Its a show car and thats all.

The MK1 golf was a stocker diesel with big wheels. Now I like golfs and I love diesels but this wasn't even turbo, it was just pointless bling.

And the type 3 fasty didn't even have a pic of the motor at all.

The contents said there was something on the drags, only 1 page. Another one on hillclimbs, again only 1 page. The article on rallying was going on about some sort of racing before Adam was born. Where's a modern VW rally car feature?

What about an interview with stan, or maybe stan could write a column? The only interesting things in the whole book were Wayne penroses turbo type4 notch and the splitty panel resto. The rest well...It's mostly high dollar chrome and no brain.
What about a feature on Pete Gumley's car? Oh that's right, the only thing on the whole freakin car that is VW is the block crank and rods!:cussing Couldn't have a car that is not VW...chassied/bodied/gearboxed...so don't start on the hybrid crap.

I'm sorry guys, but it's not good enough. It is the same problem we've had in VW mags in past years, purist attitude and second rate features.

And Craig, don't even get me started on Hot4s and the like...I stopped buying that crap years ago.:grind:

If they want be purists, then be proper purists and make sure all the cars are dead standard. And that means no empi stickers.

Yes that's right, now I'm getting cranky! :grind:

Chill, dude...!

I have discovered over the years with magazines, you can please most of the people most of the time, but never please many VW enthusiasts

That's the reason ALL the other Aussie VW mags died. Good on Craig for having a go - I'm not keen on some of the cars in there either, but magazine production is a constant state of evolotion and trying to keep people happynn[ Edited on 11-8-2005 by VWCOOL ]

Ok, I rephrase it in the positive.

feature cars with lots of go as well as show. (That is proper modified engines.)
Proper competition feature cars.
Cars with hybrid powertrains once every two issues.
Event reports that go for a couple of pages.
tech things your average mug could do.
Columns written by industry experts.
Readers cars page.
Projects underway page.
Interviews with older racers/repairers.

I know some of these things have been done a bit, but theres a good place to start.

BTW, the cars need not be stunning show machines to feature. I'd be just as happy to rough old buckets that are thrashing the competition.

Seems to me you guys should start your own magazine and see how it competes against VWMA.
I think it is an OK read for 8 bucks every 3 months. If he did lots of non VW engined features I think he would have to cut back on the genuine powered rides. Maybe if it continues to grow in sales there will be more variety as we go along.

Mmm...interesting.

My only comment is that I take all constructive criticism on board, but only after being approached directly. I'm all about the good old days, you know when someone picks up the phone, or we meet at a show, or for coffee, etc. That is how Jack Rizzo, Wayne Penrose, Kimm Garland, Boris Orazem, Richard Holzl, etc, became valued contributors and friends. And the reason they have been welcomed on board is because I'm the first to admit that there is still an enormous potential in this magazine to expand its content for years to come, and plenty of room for additional contributors and all related VW topics. I know that I can't cover everything on my own, and wouldn't even attempt it.

My phone number is 0419 735 596, and I'm always happy to chat. Obviously, being a one man show, you might get message bank, but I'll call back directly if you leave a name and number. Welcome on board.

And on the direct question of water cooled or modified VW's, there's Jack, Kimm, Brad from Custom Off Road with a couple of stories in the pipeline, and a story backlog, among which are some of the cars mentioned in this thread and a few others. And I've already spoken to Peter Gumley about a future article. I was very impressed with the car. Stan and I talk regularly, and we have featured the twin ignition. There's more to come......

It's happening guys. But please, talk with me first about concerns and suggestions. It disheartens me to see the forum used to chat about topics which have not initially been raised and discussed with me in person. Things happen quicker and better in the magazine when people talk to me directly.

Cheers
Craig

I think Craig is refering to when people actually talked to each other, instead of getting caught up in an online conversation that doesn't allow you to really get to know the perosn.

Would love to see you get involved in the mag Jon, and for the racing component that Jak has continue to grow.

Cheers. :thumb

Get Greg Ward to do an atricle on the Hillclimbs, he does all the events, even the ones out of state, drives his car there & back, I think he may also be leading the Hillclimb championship.
