The engine is not a type 4, maybe an early type 3.....................the engine number will be on the top of the case, under the fan housing in the
middle........or it maybe a "new" factory case....... the pipe on the lower right is where the original type 3 dipstick went ( you need to buy a
type 3 to type 1 dipstick adapter kit if fitting to a beetle).....................oil cooler can be mounted the same as a type one, either in the fan
housing(older style) or external "dog house" to the fan housing (later style)............as for the pipe under the sender WTF !!!

That tube under the pressure switch is most probably because the P.O tapped into an oil gallery for an external oil cooler or something and that is
just a plug. (just a guess, duno if there is an oil gallery there on type 3's, maybe some1 else can confirm)
hope this helps

Your local VW guy may have the dipstick adapter. I got a Empi one from Leons Motors in salisbury.
Only $15.00. If your loacal guy can't help may be able to get one and have it sent up in the mail.

From what I can tell, the type 3 cases are just type 1 cases with the engine number and dip stick hole in a different spot. |

The cases themselves should be much the same with some minor external differences.
I think generally type 3 cases can be readily converted to type 1: main thing is need to fit a dipstick tube into correct place (drill a hole), and
blank-off large oil-hole at bottom of case. Not sure how easy it is to fit the oil pressure switch into the beetle's position (type 3 has it mounted
on oil cooler).
Generally type 1 cases don't convert as easily to type 3. Need to provide the large oil-filling hole at bottom (plus its 2 studs) -- and IRS type
3's need mounting points for the large cross-mount bar at the rear - may not be possible to attach? Hope someone has more definite answer.
BUT after a certain year (around 1970 or 71 ??? not sure), such cases are "Universal" and should be more easily set up for either type 1 or 3.

Little bit of a blanket statement there, not entirely true.
The universal cases sold by VW Germany, Brazil and Mexico were never fitted to 71 on cars from the factory.
They were just your basic AS41 dual releif case but had the cradle points for Bay window bus and type 3 but also had a type1 dipstick tube and oil
pressure sender port below the dist, type 3 engines never had those and the factory bay window upright engines never had the type 3 filler port just
the cradle mounting points.
No factory Beetle cases had the cradle mounts or type3 oil filler
Fitting a type 3 engine in a bug or bay is a PITA as they have no oil pressure sender and need the adpater dipstick and fitting a bug or bay engine in
a type3 is a PITA as they have no dipstick port and need one of those cheesy oil pump cradle adapters.
So replacement case were universal they had all those features.

Thanks Joel, that's the sort of clarification I meant. Sort of thinking "more unviersal" in application vs. true Universal Case. (And I thought
PITA was some sort of oriental bread. Woops). But is it possible to drill and tap the oil pressure switch into a type 3 case, in the type 1
position? Or does it all have to be dismantled. Ditto the dipstick tube...?

All the type 3 blocks I;ve seen have had the boss there for the sender its just not drilled out.
Unfortuntaly drilling it out means a full tear down to clean out the passages after.
Another alternative is to use the type 3 oil cooler and mount the sender in it.
Was an old showcar trick to tidy up the engine bay, just takes a 90 degree fitting and some trimming of the doghouse.

The type 3 1500 cases are risky, as many didn't have separate cam bearing shells! They are a slightly beefed up 1200cc case, none the less bored out
to 1500cc.
Once the bores are worn for the cams, its worn. As the bearing surface is actually the case. I had one myself but moved on to alum case for a
project.
As said though, this isn't all type 3 engines.

Quote (from Joel): "...and need one of those cheesy oil pump cradle adapters."
Joel, could you explain please what the oil pump cradle adapter is, if possible? Do you just mean the large bar that makes up the rear engine mount,
attaching to the case with the 3 bolts ?
[We have a 1976 beetle with an original engine, that has an AS 21 case. Don't know when these started, but must have been quite late in Aust., for type 1. All the other original S'bug & type 3 engines we've had from 1970 on have been AS 41, as far as known.]

It's just an adapter so you can fit the Type3 or Kombi cradle bar to a Beetle engine if it doesnt have the 3 mounting points.
They pick up the 4 oil pump bolts and the lower case bolt.
Supporting the engine and gearbox using only those is not a good idea long term.
One of the spare engines I had came with one.
