An interesting one that!

A CE engine is a 1700cc Type 4 motor, but the listing I usually use doesn't say whether its from a Kombi or a Type 4 sedan. However as VW 411s weren't sold in Australia, I suspect it's from one of the earliest Type 4 Kombis, from about 1973.

The engine number list I normally use is:

its absolutely a type 4 engine. What size it is now is a mystery though until you pull it apart as parts from 1700, 1800, 2000 are interchangable. What year model is your kombi? How do you figure its doesnt belong?

what does s mean

I need help to identify what engine is in my herbie, the engine number starts with an S , What does that mean, it has single port heads and sounds quite hearty but not ground pounding.

Merlyn, have you actually seen that number stamped on the engine? It looks like a gearbox number.
All the 1700 engines I've seen are CA numbered

stamped on the case below the generator

S 8350200
is the number,
I have found no listing for an S prefix
Maybe its the S for an extra turn of speed
{jim douglas's words}
Maybe the S stands for something else all together....... be polite:sandrine

Could the first digit "8" be a "B" instead. Then it MIGHT be a 68-69 Kombi 1600 engine which has been rebuilt and someone has put an S next to the engine number to identiy it - many rebuilders put their mark near the engine number so they can recognise their own work.

There is no S series engine, only D, E, F, H and B for the single port engines, and AD, AC, AS, AJ etc for the twin port engines.

I just went to double check, its definately the way I posted it, doesnt even look ambiguous
However i wiped a bit more of the case on the side and stamped side ways like an after thought are the numbers
C 2933D and E404G
which doesnt make it any clearer at all
Its a mystery:o:(
Cheers Tony
Ps it has a CONTI motors sticker on the tappet covers its a really old looking sticker barely ledgible I think they are a bribie island vw shop

Maybe it's GE? Sometimes the numbers are hard to read

http://www.wackyracers.co.uk/tech-refpages/chassis-t2.html

Just a thought cos I don't come up with a CE in searches

Just found this. It breaks down the VIN number codes, may help to understand it's history

On a recent bad little buggers run my motor was identified as a 1200 because of the fan shroud and a few other bits so I think that it probably is a 1200 seeing as thats what it should be in a 62 I think no idea what the numbers are all about.
Thanks

Hi Herbie

It could be a police number, when I fitted the WBX motor to my bug it was brand new so it had no number, I had to take it to a police station, show them my ID and receipts and they issued me a special police number.

Thats a thought.
I remember such things had to happen for Bathurst GTRXU1s and the like.
They apparently had no numbers as they were made to be race cars, however the survivors of bathurst got caught in limbo, no longer competitive race cars and not quite road cars, and they had to be independently approved by the police.
Although I doubt My engine started life as a race motor but maybe it started life as a pump motor or one of the other contraptions I have seen, who knows? but I hadn't thought about that Steve, its quite a distinct possibility.
Cheers Tony
