Which is the best MK1??

Hi all,
I am new to the water pumper scene (No coolant used in the past) and I am thinking of getting a mk1 golf as a run around whilst I restore my other two beetles. I have heard that '79 on are beeter as there are German made, is this so?? I want a 4 door with tow bar and the 4 headlight grill. Is the 4 headlight a standard thing or a optional extra?? Are they available?

Thanks for any info, advice.

Ian.

hi the 78 onwards mark 1 golfs were built outside of australia whereas the 76 and 77 were built here. i have heard the aussie cars werent as good but they all rust, so its just a matter of finding a good one.
speak to Karmen on here he bought mine and is selling it i think. its a 79 diesel

Hi Ian, long time no see... Coming to Wheels in March?

Should have just dropped me a line for this one.... 78's and 79's tend to rust A LOT less than the Australian spec ones. Tow bars are not too much of an issue, because I am sure there are heaps of wrecks out there with bars. They just attach them to the rear bumper, so it would be a matter of unbolting and fitting, then wiring up. The 4 headlight thing is failry rare. It only came out on post 1980 GTI's, GTX's and Drivers in the UK. Your best bet would be Nick at Volksparts who had one last I checked, or Brian Patterson at GTI on 02 9653 1114. you can also fit later model Cabrio grilles to the Mk1.

Hi Steve,
What date is wheels?? and where this year? I may take the '59 out for a run.
I have just about bought a '77 (or is it a '76???) 4 door with towbar no rust, origional paint, cd and bigger vw wheels (i didn't pay attention as to wheter they were 15" or 14") I am paying $725. which I think is good as it has 3 months rego on it. The interior is origional tan vinyl and looks to be in good nick. If the engine ever blows then look out as I have a sneaky plan for it in the long run.

Please keep the Advice coming!!!
