Kombi gearboxes
Is there any difference between a 2.0l gearbox and an 1800 ? My twin-cab has a noisy gearbox/diff and I was given an 1800 one (well, he said
that's what it was). I was going to send it off to get it checked out before installing it, and I thought I'd better see if they're
the same. Are there any i.d. numbers ? Do they have the same ratios ?

Nitram,
The GB's are different. 1.8L has a lower ratio and different starter (different flywheel diameter).
The mounting is the same though.
To do a swap you will need to keep the flywheel/clutch etc with the GB.
From memory the 1.8L box has 4 ribs and the 2.0L has 5 ribs (across the GB under the output shafts.

1600/1700 has 3-ribs and is a 002 box
1800 has 5 ribs also 002
2000 has 6 ribs and is a 091.
091 has different bellhousing and starter. You can use the 002 by putting the 091 bellhousing and starter on it.
The gearing is also different

This is a 6-rib (I use this with my V6)

It will have an 091 part number. With 205/75R15's it will do 3100rpm at 100kph.
This is a 5-rib (I did use this with my 1915)

It will have an 002 part number. With 205/75R15's it will do close to 3300rpm at 100kph.
This is a 3-rib

It will also have an 002 part number. With 205/75R15's it will do close to 3400rpm at 100kph.

Does the 2lt and 1.8lt gearbox use the same aftermarket kit to fit it into a beetle ?

Wes, hidden amongst your vast wealth of vw knowledge, do you happen to have g'box and diff ratios for a '90 2.1 wbx? I don't think the
o'seas models were different to oz but am not positive.
thanx
tonyg

2lt and 1.8lt use the same adaptor kits to fit into the cars.
Tony, no I am not 100% sure on the ratios. I only really know what i have read about the ratios.
Try Leon from Leons Motors in Salisbury. He knows his gearboxes. Same goes for Lawerance from German Autos.
