New "Formula Vee" Engine. 1st test run vid.
Hey Guys
I thought I share some video footage of my new Vee engine being given its first run in a dummy car.
The video title/name was mixed up with another video so dont be sucked in by it.
I think the jetting needs a little attention, prolly a bit lean with the exhaust gas temps a bit high and it idles a bit fast for my liking but its
all fairly promising at this early stage!
Enjoy: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-236345357158387520

M8, I cant stop laughing about that one.......................
There must be at least a couple of inch/Lbs available from a couple fo different jet changes. Wow, that must surely win a race!!!
And they would have you believe that is close to rocket science!!!!!!!!
Yer, the heads thing is a worry for the 1.6 brigade. They messed up their research there!
Same as the cranks, A lot of dramas would prolly go away with a counterweighted crank. But you cant have a bulletproof engine can you!!!

Errrrrm, how long have you got?
To bring you right up to speed on things would take quiter a few afternoons and plenty of slabs!
Id be typing here for hours to outline some of the shenaigans going on.
There is a concerted "effort" to overly complicate the issue of jets in carbs. This is related to the "push" for EFI on F-Vee's.
There are perhaps a couple of dodgey cams (possibly Engle 110) running around from the Formula First (NOT FV 1600cc). F-1st is slightly different to
1600cc and is only really running in S.A.
There are various head castings, same as 1200, but unlike 1200, there is a vast difference in performance between the "good" ones and the rest.
There's an issue with cranks, cases and high rpm's that makes it a little hard for someone on a budget to build his own reliable 1600.
The list of other issues is endless as im sure Nathan agrees.
Actually I bet hes grinning from ear to ear here! (add guffaws of laughter)

Yeah, unfortanately there's a lot of 'bending of the rules' and in some cases, dead set cheating. I think a lot of sealers are not doing there
jobs properly and sealing engines with illegal parts. We had one bloke last year who was found out to be running illegal empi high flow heads while
the rest of us (i assume) are using the standard 1600 heads as cast! The thing is he still didn't win the championship!
Basically, it seems honesty and ethics may be going out the window as winning at all costs (or budgets!!) is the main driver.

really help the get up and go until a fiston leaned out and melted, alloy piston top everywhere

Yep, same situation it appears.
We run restrictor plates on the 1600s, in an attempt to achieve parity with the 1200s. Personally I think they should ditch the plates and let the
two run as a separate series, as they already really do anyway.

Nate
One thing is for certain, blatantly illegal engines are running. There is no question.
But, one factor that encourages this is the fact that the current fold up seals we use now can be unfolded just sufficiently to remove the tie wire
without breaking, do whatever you like to the engine, and fold them up again. With considerable care, this can be done several times.
I have proved this! But apparently thjis dun matter.
I can hear you LOUD & CLEAR on the sealing/sealer issue..................................

This I heartily agree with but sadly its a fact of life in heavily controlled classes.
I have advocated a "claiming rule" on engines for years. Make the claim effective immediately for cash on the spot.
Make it, say oh I dunno, about 4 large. Thatll quieten 'em down a bit and discourage GP engines!! LOL

There is noting new with people breaking the rules it had been going on for decades. There had always been those people that value a hollow victory
win with cheating. This will never change and these people never stick around for long. After all where is the sense of accomplishment if you are
knowingly cheating! As soon as you allowed modification away from standard, it is hard to control how far people will go. We built a vee back in the
80’s that was built doing every thing that CAMS did not have a rule for. Consequently they got one look at it and rewrote the rule. Funnily enough
20 years later it would fit right in the a modern grid line up, how thing change over the years but many they stay the same.

Thats exactly the case. There is no argument on how long cheating has, and will continue to go on in just about ANY category of just about ANY
sport!
Funny thing is that the hollow victory doesnt come into it for some people.
There is a peculiar genre of competitor that does not see a problem with the saying "Its only cheating if you get caught" and so operates with that
particular doctrine in mind.
I agree with Nathan, let the 1600's run unrestricted and as their own category.
1200cc engines have had their day. It is useless to try and invoke some kind of "parity", because there simply isnt any!
They are seconds faster than any 1200 could hope to be and are an entirely different animal altogether.
Im sure Nathan could confirm this. Just the addition of 25Hp completely changes the personality of the cars and the driving style changes so much it
might as well be a different and new car......which it pretty much is!
KKK, Tassie trip....ahh well M8, there is always next time!!
EFI would even things up a bit (fairer)?? Mmmmmmmm......errrrrr.. wellll ahh yes it would actually but at a considerable cost to each competitor.
I would envision a cost of about 2 large per car and that would be plenty cheap!
Bottom line tho is that the issue of jetting a Vee is simply NOT as big an issue as plenty of Vee guys have been led to believe. Sure, it may help to
a certain extent, but it is simply not to the magnitude that some guys who DEFINITELY DO know better would have many a poor Vee guy believe and unload
his hard earned readies on unnnecessary jetting changes and "magic" carb mods!
Ahhh the fun and games of it all!!!!!!!

Your right the 1200 and 1600 are not in the same class. We are having the same problem in historic FF at the moment with people wanting to bring late
(90’s) model cars in to the historic class. There are already two classes and the older car are already totally out classed. There is no was my
old elfin could keep with 1600’s although the car did hole the Collingrove SA hill climb record for close to a decade.

I have not had a change to read all the info yet, but it is amazing how much a 90’s model car increases in values if they become historic. We were
offered a Lola F5000 for $5000 years ago, had no were to put it and at that point in time there was no class to run in. The same car sold a few years
ago for over $100,000. I’m not saying that the reason behind it, just interesting. Historic racing is an expensive hobby as you would well know.
They are so picky with car not running the correct parts. We have had to cast up four new rear upright as the one on our cars were cracking. That
that this was a problem, we found the original mounds. Just saying you crash then and it take a lot of time and money to put them back together if you
can. This also could lead to new car coming in to the class as people are reluctant to racer the older cars. We have a mark 4 hewland in one of our
car, when in England we when to see hewland to see if we could get spares. They did not even have records of the mark 4. So not really kind thing
you want to spear into the wall backwards with.

In fairness and something that got introduced into a number of class where each compeditor builds a motor which then goes into a big motor pool. each
motor then gets given to the compeditor based on a lucky dip. so you might end up with your motor or someone elses this will create parity and loose
the cheating aspect quickly.
Cheers
