Sabre MKII (progress pics 08/06/07)

Hello all,

New to this forum so I thought I'd show off a pic of my DRB kitcar. Its a Type 3 floorpan with integrated spaceframe and four-point cage, IRS, Kombi 4 speed, full race suspension and a mild Subaru EA81.

I'm currently refurbishing the interior with new carpet, console, dash, leather trim, switchgear and lighting.

Cheers,
Mick.

great looking car, would love to know what you have done to create a 'mild' ea81? i am running one of these in my bus and would be interested to know what tweaks can be done.

OK, some other pics. First one is after removing the quad exhaust tips that stuck out 12 inches from the back of the car (!) and fitting some nice recessed ones. This shot also shows the trayback ute taillights which are going in favour of 2 flush-mounted round lights each side (1 brake, 1 indicator).

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/1531/dscf2832upload6ax.jpg

These pics show some of the interior work I have started, but the console is now coming out of the car for a complete re-trim in the same leather as the door panels, with a full length aluminium insert.

OMFG I don't know why some of those pics turned out that big! Admins remove them if necessary.

As for the EA81, motor was modded when I bought the car, but I'm told that its a mild grind cam, some porting and polishing of the heads, and I know its a 40mm downdraught Weber carb. Check out this site for info and bits for these engines:

Yep, passes all relevant requirements in QLD, so there should be absolutely no problem in NSW (the roll cage is actually an engineering requirement!). My car was built and approved in 1994. Helps that they were designed and built in Aus (Gold Coast).

And baybuscamperkid re:EA81.

These are the preferred powerplant for gyro and ultralights because of their amazing reliability. Check out Australian Rotorcrafts website for info on some INCREDIBLY powerful and trick EA81s.

cheers, noticed you are using the same doorhandles as me as well, 8 0s datsun. so much classier and more comfortable then the plastic VW ones and hook up near perfectly to the original mechanism.

Thanks for that info, I've actually been wondering about the door handles.
Someone mentioned that they thought they were early Ford, but I noticed the surrounds on the inside handles are marked Nissan.

As I am new to the VW scene, I really didnt know anything about the car drivetrain wise, I just reported what the seller told me.

The knowledgable and friendly Peter from Custom Off Road has looked at the underside for me and has pointed out that it is NOT, in fact, a Kombi box, it's a Beetle.

Thanks Bond for the awesome looking wheels and of course to Peter for the loan of some bolts to try them on.

If it's OK, I'll get it booked in for a thorough inspection as soon as I have time.

BTW, if anybody knows who can supply LEGAL wheel spacers for my 4 stud pattern, please share.

Sabre MKII

Contacted Denis Bedford who started DRB and designed/built these cars for some info.

Turns out my car is a Sabre MKII (mine's built '94).

Between 80 and 200 Sabres and Sabre MKII kits sold in total.

Finally got a couple of days off so here come some progress shots:

With the blanking plates fitted:

A close up of the completed left side:

Another view:

These lights worked out exactly how I wanted. Just waiting for the epoxy to dry on the right side, all the wirings done, so should be finished tomorrow morning. I'll put up some night shots by the end of the weekend to show how the LED bulbs worked out.
