I've got a couple of Corvair motors and a conversion kit for a VW. The motors are dismantled but all the parts are there . One pair of heads have

only prob is as i found when reseraching is that they turn the wrong way and i dont know anyone in Aus that does the kit for oppostie operation but

There was a red Karman Ghia getting around Melb a few years ago that had a Corvair motor in it. Was a pretty neat fit from memory.
You have to get a special cam or some thing so the Corvair motor can run backwards on a VW trans.

All the Corvair parts you need (reverse rotation parts too) can be bought here. Having to ship all your spares in from the US would be a hassle, but
it might be worth it!

Not sure, It seems the norm to reverse the engine rotation. The engine was originally designed to run backwards so that cost savings could be made
from using normal (front engine) diff gear. Some people reckon that the engine runs better when it's converted.:vader

You can buy reverse rotation cams from clarks corvair parts in the states - not sure how much though.

I know of a guy in the late 80's from Melbourne who had a Corvair motor in a Type 3. He came up for a Type 3 show we had on the Central Coast.
The fit was sweet, the noise was even better. The only problem he had was the way the fan belt loops over the top with a kink, and that this kept on
breaking. The power increase he got when the belt broke though was huge.
I'll have to dig out my old photo's as I'm pretty sure I've got a pic of it. Even still, if I attach a pic of the car, someone
from Melbourne may know of it. Aqua blue squareback, pumped guards, with Simmons rims. Sound familiar to anyone?

Go down to your local video shop, and borrow the original Thomas Crown Affair, starring Steve McQueen and Fay Dunaway, made in 1968 (not the recent
crappy remake with Pierce Brosnan)
At his coast beachouse scenes, Steve drives a much customised Meyers Manx buggy - powered by a Chev Corvair motor. You can see it clearly. And the
sound...wow.

very confused. the picture LOOKS like im looking at the sump, but then something is sticking out of it, and the spark plugs surely wouldnt be on the
bottom. And 6 cylinders but 4 ports? whats going on there?
I dont see the point in corvair or porsche conversions when VW make a suitable engine and they are right here in everyones garage. Japanese import
engines I can see the point. PRICE. but old porshes are slow and new ones are very exxy. I know nothing about corvair but imagine they arent flyers
and being from US not cheap.

Well , if I was to put one together I would replace rings and bearings , they look ok but so I guess you could just bolt it back together. One motor
was in a car so I assume it has the right cam for a VW. I'll have a good look next time I'm near the shed its in and see if it says anything

The picture looks a little odd as its been partly modified to fit a plane, no need for a cooling fan when you've got a prop turning infront. The
one I have been looking at isn't modified in this way.

It actually takes more than a cam to reverse the rotation of an engine. The pistons need the opposite offset (though I suppose you could mount them
back-to-front if they aren't notched or such,) and if the crank has chamfers on it's oil holes they would be going the wrong way. Then, of
course, the oil pump would be working backwards, the thrust from the cam and Dizzy drive gears would be the wrong way, the dizzy (or magneto) itself
wouldn't like spinning the wrong way - nor would the alternator or cooling fan...

standard they produce 90HP i think and they also come in a turbo model which was 140HP but only in the USA

I think the corvair engine should be left in the corvair car... Have a look on Ebay there dam cheap.. I saw one in the flesh last Jan up at
Willowbank Drags... It looked neat crusing in... Me n Boris were over n under it while the guy was driving along..
I havent seen one in Sydney for years n it was about 1972 or so when i saw one in a VW shop happened to be in a buggy
Good thinking 70autostik there are a lot of other components that have to be looked at... but i suspose that this mod has been done in the US
heaps of times so they must work in the reverse direction.
If i was going to Restore another car... ( cut my throat someone) It would be a Corvair... but the razor blade is closer.

The original Corvair was 80 Hp, there was then a larger 2.7 or 2.8 which had 110 and 140 Hp, The Turbo was a cool 180 Hp!!:o
