The Herbie repair day with pics
As some of you know Jades' herbie was feeling very ill.
The clutch had just been replaced (was slipping badly) and now the car launches in first with a hell of a shudder.
So the brissy AVD rescue squad got into it. I still dont know all the names as most ppl were called by handles, mate or OW you trod on my head!
First thing was to start it. Jump started and into the garage, wheels off lid off tyres to be pumped, hubs off so extra greasy brakes could be
cleaned and adjusted.
Its amazing how quick it all happened when one does wiring, another wheels etc and before long there was the clutch....

The clutch return spring was long gone, the gear box rear mounts were cactus, it also had a solid clutch plate ( no springs) and loose linings. None
of us had seen a plate like it but it came from mick mtrs as a replacement 6v plate.
New bits, engine back in.
VWboy cleaned the engine up a treat, the exhaust needed some grinding, drilling and tapping to get back on, grease job, brakes adjusted, engine wired.

tuned so it was running like a gem, Das Driver took it up the street and the ba$tard of a thing still shudders like a very shuddery thing. six hours
of frenzy was unsuccessful.
Various theories about flywheel not on str8 ( has been rebuilt recently) clutch faulty, bowden tube, sun spots etc abound but amid sadness and
frustration rather than delight and glee the consensus was take it to Mick Mtrs with the old clutch bits and say fix, a hoist would help and more 6v
experience.
The mobile mechanic that did the job said he had no idea.
Doesnt do it in reverse of any other gear. but boy does it shudder on takeoff.

I need to get my coffee stuff back and vw boy has either left his snap on torch in the car or it got into another toolbox by accident ( lots of tools
there inc me )
Apologies to Jade for an unsuccessful effort but major thanks to all who took the time to do good.
Major kudos to Das Dubber for putting it together.
Nice little bug, now runs sweet, clean and with adjusted brakes but still shudders.

Didn't come across the torch in my gear when I unloaded sorry.
Although it we didn't achieve the desired result, at least the old bug got an oil change, quick tune up, front end has been greased (and the other
work mentioned above)....so the day was not a total failure!
Jade make sure you let us know what the problem was if/when Mick Motors sorts it out! I am always keen to learn something new and add it to the list
of trouble shooting scenarios.
Todd - nice work on the kitchen - I am sure you must have been knackered after all that work!

It was a very big day, Im not as young as I was.
66 deluxe, I have an esspresso machine at home, 2 hourly long blacks kept me going real well.
It was Johnny Cash covering 9 inch nails' 'HURT' that did me in, was all too slow from there.
I was listening to The Cult most of the day, good music to use power tools to!
66 do ping me when you want a lift, keen to see your ride, not sure if I want to sit in the passenger seat, Missile Alert.
Im sure the clutch was shuddering from a clutch flywheel issue. Certainly didnt feel it in the cable like a bowden tube. When the weld in my first
kombi went at the gearbox support it kind was spongy. That shudder was so hard and defined it had to be from one of the rotating components. You
could feel it right through the floor bang bang in sync with the rpm. Im wondering if it was 'rebuilt' wether the flywheel is on square. If the
clutch was replaced of rebuild, the rest of the engine suggests it was (colour coated inlet runner, new heads a few bux spent) then, if it drove like
that, the only way to live with it would be to slip the clutch like crazy in first. Then glazed, fried and slipping clutch.
The other thing that puzzles me is the 'not in reverse' bit. Pushes the engine a different way... I wonder what the front gearbox mount was like?
The back ones were hammered. I thought from the bashing, never thought at the time to check front mount. Or bowden tube. I excluded them as it
sounded like the clutch itself ( still may be, If not sure on the plate )
Still, sweet bug. The quickshift really did good things for the box.
kkk

I have found that a problem with the old style clutch pressure plates with the 3 arms attached to a flat ring is that as the clutch pressure plate get
hot it can soften the springs and you end up with uneven tension when the clutch plate is bolted onto the flywheel. You can see it in extreme cases
where the ring that connects to the 3 arms looks crooked. You can check by measuring the hieght of the ring all round from the flywheel. If its out as
the flywheel rotates against the throw out bearing it causes the clutch to slightly engage and disengage causing the shudder. Dunno why this doesnt
cause the same thing to happen in reverse. Maybe something to do with the lower gear ratio or something.

Here is the old gal....has had a couple of shunts in the backside which made getting the engine out tricky (cylinder cover hit engine bay). Hopefully
it will be soon providing trouble free service once again.

If the front mount is OK-make sure the Bowdwen Tube has least 1.5" of bend in it.Don't know why it happens, but have seen them undriveable trying to
take off in first, put the bend in the tube and the problem goes away.Have had to use flat washers to take up the slack.Probably has something to do
with what Alan was suggesting about the ring on the pressure plate.

Damn,
you got my face in that shot!!:o
Maybe if the straightness of the bowden tube might be the problem, we could draw a diagram for Jade and her and her Hubbie could try the repair at
home? I just checked VWDCQINC and they don't seem to have a gearbox shot, but I am sure we could find one for them.
Jade? Feel up to another attempt? this time by remote?
