timing
petrol, compression and timing = MUST work
You have petrol
I "assume" you have compression
It HAS to be timing
First check 1 -4- 3 -2
2nd check 1-4-3-2
Check for spark. Plugs fouled??
Futue te ipsum!!!

Then it should work. Did you set the timing statically/check for spark?? Go over it again, like you said it should work so it will be something VERY
obviouse.Check the dizzy isn't 180 out.......:alien

dissy is definatly in the right way around. timing set to 9 degrees BTDC for the 98 octane fuel, how should i check for spark?
as i said engine doesnt have awesome compression. compared to my recently rebuilt 1600 its bugger all. but wouldnt it at least sort of fire and run
really badly with lots of blowby if it had low compression?

So what is the compression in psi ?
Checking for spark at the points (assuming this has been done as you have checked timing!) then with one lead off the spark plug earth it against the
body (leaving about a 3-5mm gap between lead and body) and crank the motor, you should see a good spark. You will need two people for this.
what happens when you pour fuel down the throat of the carby and then crank it.

i dont know the compression in PSI, havent tested it as the compression tool i have doesnt appear to work at all.
i took the top of the carby before trying to start it and filled the float bowl up to make sure it had fuel. havent tried pouring fuel straigh down
the throat. ill recruit someone to help me tomorrow and try the spark earth thing and the pouring fuel down the throat.
there is definatly spark at the points, ignition system is all off my old engine which was running fine.

sounds like fuel is the problem. Are you absolutely positive the timing isnt 180 out? Have had this prob a few times... really annoying. Go and buy a
can of aero start or 'start ya bugger' or something like that and spray a fair bit down the carby throat. If you dont got any of that petrol shud
do.

lets say i have the dissy in wrong somehow.
i set the tappets on the engine by turning engine till rotor button was almost at no1 firing position notch on dissy then lining up TDC on the pulley
and crack in the crank case. then setting tappets for #1 and turning 180 degrees backwards etc.
so if my dissy is out then ive set the valves out of whack too.....
how can i check that the dissy is in right and then re set tappets without using the rotor button and firing position notch on the dissy?

Well, its either 180 out or its in. So when you crank the engine over by hand until its fired #1 (rotor pointing to that lead) then take off the #1
cylinder rocker cover. Then both tappets on the #1 cylinder should be closed ie can set the clearances.
I doubt if you put the rotor in wrong you would have noticed that one or more of the tappets wernt out and figured something was wrong so im guessing
that rotor is right. Double check the firing order--> sounds like a fuel problem to me. Try teh fuel/ aerostart down the carby throat method and see
if she will fire up.
good luck

ok as the muirs book says. ive checked coil by taking lead off at the dissy end and holding next to body and cranked engine by hands. no spark at
all.
is this a good way to check? do u need to use starter motor to crank engine to get an accurate result?
engine has fuel as spark plugs are wet when pulled after cranking the engine.

unfortunatly i dont have a mate handy to turn the key while i hold the lead. spoke to craig on the fone and he reckons cranking the engine by hand
isnt gonna be enough to generate a decent spark.

The smoke i am guessing was white??

oh well whether it was the plugs or not it started after i did that ha ha.
smoke was grey/white engine hasnt got great compression remember....bit of blow by.
have just re set timing to 7.5 degrees and set the small screw on the 34pict to 2.5 turns out.
i wont start it again tonite or i might get a noise complaint but tomorrow hopefully ill be able to get it to run a bit smoother.
also just put the fuel pump from my 1600 on it because the pump wasnt working
