The Dakar dream.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Dakar_Rally

wouldn't it be a great life goal, to form together a team, and participate in the dakar. Even though winning may seem slim, i would luv to have that as a goal, and say yeah, i was there, my team was there, we had this car, AND WE FINISHED!

Have thought about it long and hard, just one of those lifegoals to show of to the future grandchildren, if any. A big adventure too.

hmm, where would i find a team.... Lol.

chris. When next I have a million dollars or so to splurge on a bit of fun I'll contact you and we can do it.

Would you want to do it in a classic VW powered Manx, a Baja, an updated Subi powered Iguana or similar, or maybe a full off road buggy like Desert Moose's?

Hmm, would have no idea wat kinda class i would do. something vw based some how, that will keep me happy. the more guts, the more interesting it will be. the classic-er we get, the simpler. Its a mix. Would be a great learning experience. and just to be there...

usually ~7 days racing >5000km split over transports and special stages all classes including production (standard 4wd with roll cage, fire safety and other basic requirements).

look at the finke first for a taste of the action. http://www.finkedesertrace.com.au/

I've crossed the Sahara going north along the Hoggar Track in a Mercedes Benz 4WD truck. To travel for days on end with only a black painted concrete filled oil drum with a steel post over it, a steel plate welded to the top and the number of kilometers to the next town welded to the plate and the number of kilometers to the last town welded to the other side of the plate, every kilometer as the only break in the view of endless yellow sand or gravel is an amazing experience.

Australia does not have any real desert. The Sahara Desert is as big as the whole of Australia. In fact the Sahara Desert, which changes its name several times extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the borders of China, where it's called the Gobi Desert.

I got to within 600 kilometers of Tumbuctu, so bajachris if we do this it is a non-negotiable part of it that after it's over we (or at least I) will go to Timbuctu. My twin sister got to within 40 kilometers of it so there is a little contest in our family to see who gets there first.
