Got a mate down the road, selling one thats running with a cannon, with padded, sports dash, centre console, all seats unrooted ( i think), rust bogged, treated and painted over asking $700.

whats special about em compared to any other golf?
Besides the golf being the 1st 'titled' hatchback car in the world?

Think it would make a decent engine conversion?

Useing for what? and being a 2lt its either not a MK1 or someone has transplanted a later engine.

What are you thinking? fit the engine to a bug?

If thats what you plan i will have to hunt you down and say nasty stuff!!! there are better engines for that dont trash the classic gti save it!!!!!!!

Chris it's not the best idea. Configuration is too wacky for what you want. As Steff said you'd be better to leave it as a mk1 and enjoy that, or get a hatch that actually handles... like a 205gti.

hehehe :)

Oh, and someone might have put a twin cam Seat engine in it if it's a 2L, but I doubt it.

don't know how it is really, well, when it comes to how much engine life is left.
they were going 60ks in 1st screaming the hell out of it, doing burnouts on a nearby field, its been sitting since, but still runs.

Its the biggest hatchback ofa car Lol

think they can make much of a performance car for being FR?

GTI's are awesome!!! Dont wreck it mate. If the engine is stuffed its easy to get another one or even one with more mumbo. I am currently driving a Mk 4 gti and 200kmph plus isnt overly tough. Buy it and a couple of euro golf mags, they look insane done into old school racers.

It more than likely is not a GTi. They never came to Aus in a mk1. That said it's kinda nuts to wreck to put the donk in a bug. Kill a subi instead.
Old school mk1s rule.

They go ok don't worry. Mines got a 1.8 with Dellorto carb and I sat behind a mk4 GTi over 75km of winding road. We hit over 180km/h at times. They only weigh 850kg.

This is it;

Chris the hot hatch thing is not about performance in terms of numbers but in terms of the amount of fun you can have around corners and tight runs that most other cars find too challenging. Quarter mile in a hot hatch doen't mean much if it can't stick to the roads through the hills etc. The numbers for my 205gti don't look overly impressive but you can have a sh!tload more fun in it than many other cars in twisty sections. It's got to do with short squarish wheel bases and low weight... and cheap fun

cheers mate.

Probs is, i got no dough and only parts. :(

hmm, so going around corners well ay? like the minis :D

but with this guy down the road, since i'm a buddy of his and his sisters, i might be able to arrange a payment plan. even with my $200 worth of split system i got in the bug, and a few casual payments, labour or wateva he wants.

More than likely though, he would want dough

ok....

the MK1 golf was the first "hot hatch" and set the bench mark for all others to follow. it was a good alround package and with a little tweeking it was fucking mental!!!!

The pug (peugot) was brought out soon after and came in 1.6 and 1.9 gti form. They did a fantastic job and the pug out handled the golf with ease power wise it was very even but head to head in standard form the pug would win just cuz it handled so bloody well

i have own'd heaps of them both over the years and i can honestly say i like them both for different reasons, not one is better overall than the other both great fun and nippy little cars.

As for fitting the engines i have seen and been in beetles with both engines and they both haul'd arse! but they are getting fewer and fewer and to pull a MK1 golf or a Pug 205 Gti to bits is a sad thing... as someone said rip a subaru down and use there donks ...

The 1600 carb model is just as fast as the injection version(only with the early models) the only place it would lose out is top end(bout 15 mph) and consuption(the injection is slightly better) i personaly prefer the carby over injection but thats me......

Take some pics, get some details dont wreck it SAVE it!!!!!

Lol, visited the fella and had a talk with him for a few hrs.

heres some more teasers, :P. He is willing to take $500 from me. has a recently recond 1600 motor, some rust fixed (other rust is in the hatch, near the rubber, not too pretty), IT IS A GTI!! IT has the tag on the front, apparently 1977 model, GLH i think i read on the back tags. 4 headlights etc on front, if that helps ID it, indicators in bumper.

:P:P , he wants to sell it so he can get a VL commodore.

he is asking $600 from everyone else. Its in Edenslanding, will get details and phone number to help him put up a post. I can't afford it at this time.

Some things aren't working on it. indicator lenses on bumper are missing, he can't find em. Has no radio head set, Tacho wiring rooted, speedo works. gearbox fine, he gonna put on some decent rubber to (he got some spares to swap on it).

Anyone can make a replica. They only need to bolt on a few bits. Is it 4 or 2 door?
Injected or carb? GTi only came with two doors and injection. Bumpers same on all models depending only on age. Be nice if it is one though!!!!!
