gear stick adjustment??????

Hey all got my gear box on the chassis on the weekend, when i installed the gear stick leaver to the chassis i noticed it had elongated holes for the bolts that hold it on. I was just wondering if these were some sort of adjustment because the box seems real hard to select gears i know its old and prolly needs rebuilding but it wasnt like that when i pulled it out of the car 2 years ago........... :)

yes u can loosen them off and slide the plate around untill u get optimal shifting ease.

Hi Tobys mate,

Unless You have installed a gear lever before...
it can drive You crazy...

The reverse lock out plate, with the upturned slide on the RHS...
and the plate pushed towards the LHS...
Now the gear assembly itself, can be adjusted as you said...
so, tighten the bolts up slightly and see if You can move thru the gears OK...
If not move the assembly towards the front or back of the vehicle....
making sure the reverse lockout plate is on the LHS..
so You have to push the gearlever down to get reverse..
If You can get reverse without pushing the lever down..
its not seated correctly....

Once You have done all this and it works OK...
If You have any other problems, it can be a $10 plastic bush located rewards in the tunnel just past the gearlever.
its a pain to replace, so i'm told...

Best of Luck

Lee

Yes that is the bush that 68autobug is talking about & yes there is a plate that goes under the shift lever, its the reverse lockout plate mentioned above. Without those two items you will never be able to shift the gears properly.

the lockout plate stops You hitting reverse when You go into 2nd gear...
its the oval shape same as the gearlever base only it has a large hole in it and a raised side which sticks upwards and on the RHS....

the small nylon/plastic bush - the replacement is split on one side, so You just put it over the shaft and a metal ring goes over it to keep it on...
just rearwards of the gearlever base..

so i went to vintage vw today and got the parts as u guys said, i was missing the reverse lock out plate the nilon sleeve and i also bought a new selector rod to box coupling. I just finished installing them and mate what a difference it made. The bloke in the shop said to adjust the selector u need to pull it into second then lock the bolts up this made the gear shifting so smooth i cant wait to test it out there is no wobble in the stick its like a brand new car. my brother was that impressed with what we learnt he adjusted his gear selector, just one of the many things he needs to do to the bug before he gets his Ls anyways thanks 4 the advice peoples greatly apreciated
