Type 3 Fastback resto

Well the time has come for my much loved fasty to get some much needed tender loving care.

Before I start I would like to stress that this is not going to be some sort of brilliant Dasdubber style resto. I am not a pro or even gigted in the art of car restoration, simply a novice owner semi rolling up my sleaves. I suppose this thread is for the fellow novices (most of us) who can relate to what I am doing and perhaps we can share some information. And who doesn't like a pics of a resto hey.

Ok, I bought the car a few years back and then spent quite a lot to get the engine, wheels, gearbox and electrics right before finally getting her on the road and RW.

When I bought the car I was told it was rust free (I know I know) so the body was of secondary importance to actually getting it roadworthy. Now however I have tired of the ever fading 'mat black' and wish to give the car a full going over before I look to get the car resprayed.

I don't have a lot of money or a lot of room so it won't be a pan off job, however I am pretty much in love with this car so short cuts such as bog and the ignoring of rust just won't be tolerated.

So first up some pics of the car itself, looking a little tired.

front left panel removed.

This was a relief as there were thankfully no nasty surprises. In fact she looked very solid.

unfortunately while rust was not obvious in the lower section of the panel, I couldnt help myself and kept investigating... and a little bog was found.

This panel will have to be repaired.

good luck,
good to see a fastback being done makes a change from the others.

I've seen a lot worse on the rust front.
I remember seeing this as a body only years ago

Meanwhile I have been gutting the interior with a view to checking out the condition of the floor (pan).

The pan was covered in a black tar like stuff which had actually preserved the pan reasonably well.

You can tell where the tar like stuff is no longer preventing rust however as usually it is difficult to remove from rust free metal, however it lifts and flakes off any of the pan that has rust.

The pan was something I was pretty nervous about, because I knew that the car let water in, which pooled in the floor in certain areas.

However the pan had no holes whatsoever. Surface rust looks nasty, but is easily removed. This period has been a pretty big relief for me.

I also noticed that water had pooled under the back seat on the opposite side of the battery (left side) so was keen to explore this area too, but as the pictures will show, this was absolutely rock solid.

The old black carpet will be replaced (I am thinking grey) and I am looking also to repair the tired and sagging front seats.

The wire brush is tough work, however the grinder makes short work of surface rust.
