Good Baja Engine
hey all,
i thought it would be nice to know what enging ppl put in there bajas.
I'm currently trying to decided what to do.
go for performance aftermarket vw air-cooled or go for water-cooled?
i currently have a stock 1500 with msd ignition setup

i have a mostly stock 1600sp engine in mine.
speed costs money.
the stocker your engine remains the easier to get parts when it breaks offroading etc.

Yep - same here. Running a stock 1600tp but I have beefed up the carb and plumbed extractors running 4-2-1 for good torque.
Like the above - Speed does cost money but so does reliability. I would rather spend my money on reliability then neon lights or chrome doo dads.

i'm just looking for some reliability. my engine is getting tired. i want to re build it but also get a new one. i'll probably go for another stock
engine i guess. what are the performance SCat engines like? i got a friend who can provide me one if i'm interested.

I think you should go for a near stock 1600 or maybe a 1641 (87 mm pistons) with a mild cam and a 4 into 1 exhaust.

We just sold our 1641. putting a subi engine in the poraga.
now we just got another beetle (going to baja this one) and we were shocked at the lack of power the stock 1300sp makes. we took for granted being
able to pull over 150km/h (missing the 1641 already). the 1300 will only do 110km/h down hill! but the car came with a 1600tp which is going in this
week!
when it needs a refresh it will definately get larger pistons and a cam

There isn't many places that you can go 160 off road, so I wouldn't worry about that. I would be looking for an engine that has more low down
torque. Some people use type 4 (Kombi) engines but I think they are too heavy. It's best to keep you car light. A lot of people swear by the stock
1600tp engine for recreational off roading. I would look for a running second hand engine in good condition and put that in. Then I would look at
making it more reliable off road. For example, the most important thing to start with is a good (no, make that VERY good) air filter. Once dirt gets
in the engine it will not last very long. Also I would look at fitting a skid plate underneath to protect the sump and the push rod tubes.
This is where you should start from....

agreed. I was just making the point that the 1641 was vaqstly superior in power delivery at the bottom end and my old motor could rev quite hard
aswell!:P

I have a 1641 in my buggy and my mate with a 32 Ford Hotrod had trouble keeping up with me. 1641's go that's for sure, I can't imagine how good an
even bigger engine would be.

what they said. 1640s are great. stocker type 4 would be good too. lot's of torque and that. then when you get cashed up, just bung a subie EJ22 in
it. Easy to get parts and a really nice engine.

my bug has a mild 1800 type 4 in it at the moment and i just got back from a week a fraser and the little beast went great i cant kill it but me being
the hoon that i am im always looking for more power i will be putting in my other type4 which is a 2020cc, balanced with a MEAN cam, hyd liffters, 7mm
bigger stainless steall valves, ported with a pair off webbers for a short time then efi but it dont really matter what engine you chosse it will get
you there i got all around fraser with a 1640 but just slower than i do now, its only in the bush you wish you had a type 4
You only need two tools
Wd40 if it don't move and it should
Duct tape if it move's and it shouldn't

Australia Day Weekend Mick was running a 1200cc and hitting the dunes as hard as I. When it gets powdery a little more torque would be nice. His Baja
is hard to catch and very nimble around the dunes compared to mine because I carry tool, a passenger and a heap of spare parts.

Having had a couple of toughie 1640s in the family over the years, i agree with what's being said. BUT it's only a few percent bigger than a stocko
1600 (actually 1584cc) so don't say no to a nice 1600 if you find one...

There are a few good engine builders down your way. AVWPC and Volkomen Art have both got good reputations. Get them to build you one up if you're not
confident at engine building. Shouldn't be too exy. Round $2k and you've got a shiny new motor.

well is it that hard for some one whose got noe idea about mechanics to try and build one? i mean what doe sit take? any special tools etc? i'm
willing to spend 2k if i have too but i'd really like to try if i can do it myself. how much would i be looking for if i wanted to have a go myself?

nah for 2k it's pretty much a second hand but you can get a kit meaning get 90% of the engine in a box ready to be bolted together. flywheels and
dist etc are not included but if i keep my original carby for the moment i basically will have a 90% brand new 2300 engine.
out of curiosity, how good is the SCAT brand?
