buffing light scratches from auto glass
Has anyone done this ? Can it be done? Is there a kit you can buy? I saw this done in a old HotVw mag. Was wondering if anyone here knows of a
similiar thing.

Ive been looking for over 30 years to the answers to yr questions
and every glass place ive been to or rang up ahs sugested the following treatment
Buy a new piece of Glass, where possible

It's quite possible, but I believe it works out quite expensive. A friend who does some vintage stuff says he has done it successfully a number
of times. Be aware, you're talking of fairly minor scratching, and even then the costs can outweigh what we pay for a new windscreen (friend
does rare vintage stuff.)

For my brother to register and RWC his kombi, he had to get a scrath removed from his windsheild. He had quite a major scratch, about 50cm long.
Rang up a mobile automotive window specialist and the scratch was removed for the princely sum of $42.
Quick, cheap and easier than buggering around trying to do it yourself.

If it is flat toughened glass, a new piece may work out cheaper. We pay $65 to get a scratch taken out of toughened glass. That is on curved glass
that is either not available new, or would cost more than $150 new.
I am sure VVDS have glass for sale at a good price. The new rear side windows for Helbus were $66 each

Belive it or not, tooth paste works great on minor scratching of dials and gauges, i guess it would also work on exrterior glass as well.But its a
slow process, it will make the glass slightly cloudy but good hand buffing with a real soft polishing wax and a soft cloth seems to clear that up. |

something to be careful of
One of the problems I was warned about is that although it is theoretically possible to buff even deep scratches out of glass, you're removing a
large curved section of glass in the process... creating a lens.... and distorting vision thru the windshield. probably fine on side windows etc, but
bear this in mind. I used an angle grinder to make space for my stereo head unit.... right under a BRAND NEW WINDSCREEN.
bugger. damn. left hundreds of tiny scuff marks on the inside where the metal had sparked up onto it. some of them came out with cut and polish, but
toothpaste did nothing. Keep it cool, by using heeaps of compound, and letting it do the work, not by pressing hard.. extra cut cream polish, but go
easy as it gets kinda hot, and the windows in dubs aint pyrex. too much screwing around can lead to a hot spot and stress. And a crack. Which I also
have thanks to a caravan near Oodnadatta.
Manual polishing, with about a litre of elbow grease, and about 10 beers, and maybe a spare windscreen are some of the necessary ingredients. And
getting a new windscreen is SO good, after twenty plus years of bugs committing suicide and gravel spitting at you, and evil atmospherics etching the
glass, Just DO IT! I have installed one myself, but the second time around i got the dude with the plastic rope doodad and swore when he popped it
into position in about two mins. I took all frikken day. and 6 beers. and i ran out of elbow grease twice.
It's like looking through a glass window...

The correct compound for buffing scratches out of glass is serium oxide, I can't recommend buffing widscreens but this stuff would do the trick.
Just wet a pad of tee shirt material and dip in the powder and buff away, keep the paste a little wet.

Anyone out there got cabrio glass for sale ?

On a side note can you buy new glass for VW's? All the glass on my car is scratched
nd needs replacing.
