What is the best shifter?

Starting to gather bits for the oval and working through my list of wants.
What is the best t-bar style shifter ?
Engine will be mild 15-1600.
What are your experiences, things to look out for etc.

Advice is always appreciated.

I've got an EMPI short shifter (round knob not T bar) with the ring pull reverse lock out , it came with the car when I bought it , the shift is good and very short compared to stock , the ring pull reverse lock out is a PITA but works well insomuch as it cetrtainly keeps you out of accidental backwards.
I had occasion to remove it a week or so ago whilst fiddling with the handbrake and the construction is very sturdy .
Would I have fitted it if it did'nt come with the car ???Deffinately , if my memory of the "wave me out the window I'm changing" stock shift is any good.

ive used both the scat and the empi, the scat beats the empi hands down where the empi has a longer throw about 3-4 inches, the scat has a throw of about 2 inches between gears. nether are as tight as the quickshift i originally had but it has a reverse lock out

Best Shifter

If you want the ultimate shifter then get a Gene Berg, they do shifters in many styles for both LHD and RHD cars.

I have had a Berg 'rapid travel' shifter in my car for nearly 16 years and it is sweet.
I used to put it into my 1200 bug during the week it was so nice.
Some people prefer a round knob however, which Bergs don't do.

They are very expensive now-a-days,
but provided your coupling and bush in the tunnel are in good shape,
a stock shifter can work nice, especially with a quick-shift ball and spacer.

Not sure if Daimo was joking or not, but I was fully expecting him to say Berg.

I would say the Berg too.

I can race change clutchless with ours in the Kombi. Says a lot for the shifter and the box condition. I dunno how long the box will last. :o

Hi

I'm not a fan of the T bar shifter, its very un-ergonomic. The Berg shifter feels very nice and positive, shame they have a T bar. I reckon the best bang for buck shifter is a bent Type 3 shifter with a quick shifter.

These range from 212 to 243 Us dollars.
Not too bad at the current exchange rate.
