Project Exit Mould(10.95@127mph)

This car started life in the late 80's in Victoria.
Tony went from shop to shop trying to find someone to help him in his quest for speed. Back then none of the shops knew how to go fast in Victoria but what they did know was the value of the good engine parts they stole from him. He then went for a rotary 12a. Never really happy and after breaking numerous transmissions he gave up and the car sat for about ten years.
It now resides in a long time good friend of mine, Mark's garage. I first met Mark in 1990 when he was racing his Blue and pink 13 second 1835 bug. He has been rebuilding that same bug for the last 15 years and although it will be VERY tough, he wanted a little something to get back behind the wheel of a VW at the drag strip. But because I am involved temporary bug will turbo EFI. Fun!!!

I think I met Tony many years ago(before rotary...exit mould:tu:)
when he went to Sydney for a visit for the VW Nationals.

It was a damn shame that the VW businesses that he delt with back then STOLE his parts and that drove him away from the scene.

From memory one of the stories was when the next engine had even LESS performance was stripped down,
his good chromoly crank was not even there, (!)
and a non counterweighed holden journal crank was what was left.

At least now, things have changed with regards to finding a good performace shop, and perhaps he will come back.

Exit Mould ???

I haven't seen Tony in over ten years, but I still remember when he was first building this car and all the hassles he was having with different vw shops around Melb. He is a top bloke and didn't deserve that.
But he still persisted in trying to have fast vw powered bug, but eventually gave up and went for a rotary....If only he had known about Vollkommen Art back then, I'm sure things would have been much different.....

Anyway this car now belongs to me. It is just going to be something to play around with at the drags untill the huxtable is eventually finished. But with the help of Nick and one of his intercooled EFI turbo motors I'll probably never want to stop driving it :-)

Bad hey, and Tony is the nicest guy in the world that would never try to roll anyone.
He had the money and spent it.

one of these shops is still going but the others have closed.
it is not my place to shame but I do believe in karma, the other shops have closed.

I like the dry ice idea. Maybe cheaper than nitrogen.

Thanks for putting up the pics Nick.

It should be finished and mounted in the car by the end of this week end.

And yes, the dry ice will go through the opening at the top very easily! ( This is a fully sealed and vented tank by the way)

164 rwkw

I just got back from the dyno.
164 kw @ the wheels with a 1994cc
It is spot on what we wanted out of this package and I am very happy. Should be good to go 110 mph over the 1/4.
more later off to Portland now.

Well done Nick - after Portland make sure you update some pics and some specs if you are able to share them. It's always nice to know what combos are producing what sort of numbers.

All the best.

Just had news that the barometric compensation on the dyno is not working properly.
This would explain why the car was so fast over the 1/8th. We were out by about 60 kw.
This all ads up to about 220 kw at the wheels out of a 1994cc engine.
This little engine first surprised me when we ran out of injector ending our dyno session early and limiting the power output.
Then blew me away at Portland when it went 100 mph in the 1/8th.
We have a lot of work to do on the rear end still so there will be an improvement!

BUT I am very embarrassed seeing as the junka has only gone 104mph half track and is a 2233cc.
Wayne P has gone 106mph in his 2800cc.

Not bad for Mark just getting back into things, he drove exceptionally well and did me proud.

More drivers wanted!!

Finally had some time to put a small video together of Mark driving well at Portland 2008.

Once again a big CONGRATULATIONS to Mark, not having driven the car before Saturday at Portland.
It was also his first time back into the seat at the drags for nearly 15 years!

Cool, nice video Nick - can't wait to see what it will do over full distance!

I'm not sure if it is has been discussed before, but can you shed any light on trans ratios?
Also one other question - hoping not to side track....I am thinking of a 2332 turbo/efi engine as you know but to date only planned one throttle body with plenums design to be researched before committing....seeing this 1994 engine runs the duals, what are your thoughts re. pros/cons of single vs dual TBs?

Cheers
Al

1st 3.40
2nd 2.20
3rd 1.56
4th 1.12
FD 4.12

The only reason we ran the 40 TB's is because I had them lying around with manifolds.
A single Tb will work just fine, remembering that's only a air control. The thing to remember is if the Tb gets too far away the throttle response will suffer.
When it's on boost it's all about injector position.
Also the thing with the VW is the limited space and sometimes there will have to be a compromise.
