Another CB From The Philippines: KO 854

This CB turned up in a Samba ad today.
It's located in The Philippines.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=533803
If the one pic offered with the ad of what appears to be the KO number is any indication, it looks like it might be a rust bucket.
It might possibly only good for parts as $2,000 is the asking price. The ad describes it in "fair" condition.
I have asked the ad placer/owner for more pics.
I note that this KO# is not on the Register.
Anyone you have any knowledge of this vehicle?

http://images.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/pix/1839343.jpg

The ad states, "Mostly of its "endangered parts" are intact like the three spoke/split window steering wheel, turn signal switch, KO badge which is 854...yes of course still runs....1200 engine, gear reduction transmission....the unit is located in my homeland, Philippines..."
Of course the steering wheel and 1200 engine would be of some interest.

The owner posted new pics to the ad.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=533803
It's really not quite as bad as I imagined it might be.
It has a really good looking hardtop that appears to be in decent condition.
Several layers of different colors of paint...maybe has helped preserve the body
Someone has fabbed some rear quarter panels with windows to fit above the siills/rockers, behind the seats and against the hardtop, and they actually look pretty nice.
For the top, the running gear, the steering wheel, the 1200 cc motor which is claimed runs, and the miscellaneous hardware alone, $2000 US doesn't sound too bad to me from what I can see.
The real plus is the body doesn't look like the rust bucket I had in my mind's eye.
This CB is more than I imagine it might be.
Curiously, it's a LHD........which adds to the oddity of having a KO number.
I think some experts need to chime in here on the discussion.
Is this a CB, or a Sakbayan?????

The 'side pods' have been cut down/out to give more room for entering the cabin. The engine lid has the vents on the rear, whereas the country buggy has them on the top. Have a look at the hole next to the rear light, looks like the metal is thick .......aka body filler !

I'm the new owner of this CB started the ground up restoration, yes its a CB not a sakbayan...has the reduction gears, three spoke steering wheel, Ko number, original wiper motor....the wiper motor you see is not the one, previous owner gave it to me as a gift...

and check the windshield frame...look at the pivot point orig brass...

There is some serious being done on this Country Buggy but it is coming along very well. Fabricating new side panels and getting the reinforcing ribs must have been a nightmare.
I have been trying to work out why this CB in LHD form has a KO number whereas all other Philippino CBs in LHD I know about do not have a KO number. The only thought I have come up with is that this vehicle is one of the 41 vehicles that were originally built in RHD format but then changed over to LHD in December 1972. Having the KO number says the vehicle was assembled using the Australian production line. Also, having such a late KO number ( Max 887) says this vehicle is one of the last cars produced.
There are several other different aspects of this vehicle I can see;
1. There are no strengthening brackets on the front axle beam.
2. The speedo and knobs are cut into the dashboard and not part of the rectangular pod which closes off the glovebox area of the dashboard.
3. The grab handle on the dash is n the right hand side which mean this was definately a LHD dashboard they used.

Keep up the good work and photos of the restoration.
Let us know if you need any help

Bearwin

The resto is coming along well. Getting all the panel work completed must have taken alot of time. Good to see the beige colour of the vehicle.
I look forward to finished photos.
