73 Beetle One of a Kind "Apparently"

Saw this and thought it sounded interesting.
Be keen to hear whether this is legit and true.

Bit hard to belive that the dash is factory fitted from the 70's. The dash looks more modern than anything Hyundai has made in the last 15 years,
let alone 1972!
Very nice looking car but you would need a sieve to separate the bull from the dust with this one....

So the general feeling this ad is a con or at least dodgy.
How can sellers make such claims then?
Surely there is more to it?
Hardly an appreciating classic if no one believes the history!

Well it's not a Karmann for starters. Also, so what does it make my steel sliding 1966 Beetle that I owned if not the 1st? Plus it's in standard
original condition - after a full body off resto. A few to many interesting facts that don't add up, at an unrealistic price.
Nice car though.

This car is a typical 1973 European Super Beetle (1303) with the factory Golde sunroof option. The questionable bit is the 1303LS badge, which
identifies the Super beetle cabriolet, not sedan and the Karmann info.
Maya Metallic paint with Lapis blue interior was one colour option for 1973. In 1974 the " Sun Bug" was a special production with gold metallic
paint, and sunroof or convertible body.
The dash is standard, as are the seat belts, and low backs were an option, as was the rear window demister.
Being RHD, it may have been ordered for South Africa, which will be on the Birth Certificate. I have seen a 1972 steel slider sunroof Beetle in
Victoria, which was also imported from Sth Africa.
Anyone prepared to pay $23,000 will check the provenance.

From memory the car was displaying some sort of authentication certificate and other framed info at the last action day. It was all set up under the

Don't think they are, and never heard of any ACVW coming with chromed wheels from the factory, were they an option on any model?? The dealer
brochures for 1973 show silver steel rims.

These 1600 1303LS beetles were sold in North America as the "Le Grande' beetle and it did come with the sunroof as standard.. along with metallic
paint etc..
fancy wheels..
I can't really think that VW would ship a car to the Karmann factory for a sunroof fitment...
they made the Karmann Cabriolet in the factory on a chassis suppplied by Volkswagen...
nice unusual beetle though [although I'm not a lover of 1303S supers]

plus adding a sunroof isn't an easy job once its left the factory...
Would be a German made car as all beetles made in South America had Torsion bar front ends and rear swing axles
drum brakes and wide 5 wheels and studs..
they never made a Mcpherson strut 1303...
they just looked like a 1303.....

Having spent almost a year restoring this car many years ago - It is legit (as far as it was a special order diplomat car - made in Germany for South
Africa) - I can not answer the "Karmann" bit, but yes, thats the original color, it had weird seats that we have never seen before, as well as the
dash was different to AUS delivered units.
Oh, and the factory chrome wheels were "VW - made in Germany" stamps on them (100% legit), & we have seen pics of it before restoration.
Not sure on the rear badge - that went missing long before we had the car.
Its pretty unique

Good to see someone with some first hand knowledge kicking in a comment. I too have seen this car 1st hand and read the documents. If it isn't legit
then they have gone to a lot of trouble. Talking to the owner they seem like nice people and didn't mind discussing.

I'm not history buff but I maybe when you wave the diplomate card around with a stack of cash they'll do anything including calling it whatever the
customer wanted. Maybe Karmann did make it for the money... Who knows... Only someone who was involved in the purchase will ever really know.
Still it's a nice Beetle and I don't like late models, but this one looks good.

Wasn't Karman, just Karman Coachworks ? ie they did a heap of stuff and not just convertibles ?
I think you will find that karman where responsible for a lot more than just convertibles.

I am aware that Karmann made more than convertibles.
So, are you are saying that in the 70's, Karmann did sunroofs for VW?
If yes, proof please.....
If no, what point are you trying to make with your comment?
(respectfully)
|
I am trying to say the 70's was a long time ago and a business such as a Karman Coach Works would have done a lot more than just convertibless.
As for proof, this beetle is it. If you read the paperwork it has you will see it is clearly identified as being done by Karman.
Since you like proof, bounce the ball the other way and provide proof that karman did not do the work ?
Beetles came from the Factory with the steel sunroof for many years and as far as I am aware they did not make any curved screen models, the flat
sceern strut beetle being the last.
So I find it very easy to acept that if someone with $$$$ wanted a factory steel sunroof fitted to their curved screen beetle in the 70's then Karman
would be a good place to get it done.
I am sure Guy_H can confirm if the steel sunroof was authentic or not.

steel sunroof Lbugs are common as arseholes in the US
germanlook and SBO gallerioes are full of them and very few are slit and fit jobs either
the bug will mosst likely be at dubs by the pieshop as it has been in the last few years so hopefully curious minds will find out
in2vws, my original pic of the boot above is shrunk down the original is like 2300x1900 or so but i dont think its any easier to make out

Hi, sweet documents, you never stop learing.
As for what was on the birth certificate. I thought I read something about Karman on it BUT being a buggy guy I wasn't paying to much attention as to
the specifics and now you have me thinking WTF would Karman do something that was availible from VW at the time .
I dunno, I will give Desley a ring this week and ask her.
