What are you guys using as fuel return lines? Now includes Factory Type 3 EFI Tank Pics.


Considering what to use in the early Type 3 as a fuel return line. Anyone let me know what they used?
Also, it looks like external fuel pump/swirl pot is the way to go for fuel delivery, yeah?

I bought some 8mm steel fuel line from a shop, but they didn't have enough. I managed to find someone that had a fuel line from a jeep that he thought might fit. So I ended up using that for the return line. The only thing was the jeep fuel line was extremely tough and I had real trouble bending it. But I got there in the end.

So now I have 3 fuel lines in the car, an 8mm line for the fuel supply, another 8mm line for the fuel return (needed for the EFI pressure regulator), and the old VW 6mm line that I will use for the carbon canister tank-vent line.

The 8mm lines exit the pan near the clutch and throttle cables. They have to be way over to the left to dodge the big type 2 gearbox. As you can see, a plate covers the original gearbox shifter hole, and the new shifter position is through the 2 inch lift kit.

I managed to die grind the original hole in the front of the tunnel big enough to fit the two 8mm lines in as well. You can also see where the surge tank will fit. A little close to the tie-rod, but it fits. The surge tank will be gravity fed from the original fuel tank, so I am also putting a 10mm outlet in the original tank to ensure it feeds the surge tank properly.

Hopefully tomorrow I will bolt the engine and radiator in properly and start running the wiring and radiator piping.

just to reiterate what Wes has already stated. I'm putting an subaru in my beetle and I am running three 6-AN (ID = 5/16 or 8mm) lines. The stock fuel line in a bug is around 5mm and would work fine for the carbon canister return but as I cut mine out I've just run another -6 line. On a tangent -6 lines will flow enough for 1000cc injectors on a four cylinder so that should be ample :) My setup goes: fuell cell --> lift pump --> filter 1 --> surge tank --> HP pump (044) --> filter 2 --> rail --> return to surge which diverts to fuel cell.

I am using 8mm rubber lines for both inlet and return no swirl pots or other crap

feed from tank to Pump is gravity using 1/2 inch line through a low pressure fuel filter

works well

Hi

Don't listen VW54 about swirl pots etc, he drives like scone gobbler and if he ever got fuel surge going around a corner he might do some damage, but as he drives like a scone gobbler its unlikely to happen.

A company in Castle Hill called Race Tech steel 02 9680 1001 can supply 5052 annealed aluminium tube which would be ideal but it would need to be securely fastened, which would be hard to do in the tunnel, OK maybe if you ran them outside the tunnel.

i got 10mm and 8mm ID stainless steel conduit from a tube mob in yatala. Wasn't cheap stuff. (Yes 10mm is quite big)

06 EJ20 NA motor is in, Radiator w/AC Condensor is in, all coolant lines are hooked up, wiring done. Just need fuel! Not long now....

i've got a 1litre surge tank and 8mm cold drawn tube from pirtek to and from the main tank...it too was pricey.

We used a surge tank too, and a VL pump, 1/2 inch feed for the pump and 8mm (5/16) for the rest... works perfect. Also changed the tank outlet from 6 to 8mm. :cool:

there is some argument to say that the gravity feed tank on a VW can somewhat negate the use of a surge tank, but what the heck, you might as well do it properly if you're going to do it at all.

Hi

Picking holes in Birchall arguments is like kicking puppies.

If you have to drive so slowly around a corner so that you don't get fuel surge or the lawn bowls ball roll around the car and you will always keep at least 1/2 a tank of petrol in the car, don't fit a surge tank.

If however you intend to go around corners faster than a sundial, you need a surge tank to prevent fuel starvation, which can kill a fuel pump or worse cause a sudden lean out in your fuel mixtures.

Does anyone out there have pics of thier Swirl Pot/Pump setups insitu? Im not sure where to locate mine......
Also, this may sound like a dumb question, does the 6mm pipe from the motor vent back to the fuel tank?

Haven't tried yet, but a 500ml or so pot upstream of the EFI pump and fed by gravity from the standard VW tank should work okay...?

yeah thats what i got on the kombi but its 5 litres...a tubular tank that lies crossways on top of the gearbox...gravity fed from the standard kombi fitting and the fuel return goes back into the other end of it and its vented back to the main tank...works great but don't know how much room other VWs have:tu:

scone gobbler i aint but am gunna try and run a 22mm id ally fuel line all the way to the pump mounted in th rear near the torsion bar tube nearly 1 litre of juice gravity fed hopefully will work oh and an 8mm bundy tube return just to stay on topic you pack of scone gobblers.

how many people drive ther street cars around corners that fast to need a swirl pot, its the sort of stuff the dyno shops sell to the young ricers to go with ther monster tachos and bright yellow shifts lights :crazy::lol::crazy::lol:
I have two fuel injected bugs, no swirl pot and no probs:lol:
I can do all the speed limits plus a bit more around corners.
with out any prob,but I am not a boy racer:no::no:
If your going to race around eastern creek race track on the week end then you may need one:lol:

So what happens when you get low on fuel, drive even slower?

I finally know why you guys are not wanting fit a swirl tank, its 1/2 a litre of fuel you will never get to use, I know VW drivers are renowned tight wads but this is ridiculous.:lol:

When you retrofit EFI to a carby car you need to replicate what the factory does, the factory cars don't use an external swirl potbut they do use a swirl pot fitted to the fuel tank.

PSD. Ricers really crack me up when they fit a monster tacho to a car that had a tacho fitted from the factory.
