My wife wants a KG :) How much for a daily driver??

My wife, beautiful, wonderful woman that she is, said the words I'd been longing to hear: "We should sell my Pulsar (2004 model) and buy a Karmann Ghia".

Given that the Pulsar is about $14,000, am I any chance of finding a good (reliable) daily driver Karmann Ghia for that sort of money?? One day it would be fixed up properly. BTW I'm in NSW, and don't really want to have to transport.

I know rexy has a LHD available in Qld for $8,500, but I'm not keen on the LHD, but very keen on the $8,500.

e-bay has two (one in Vic other in Qld) but both exceed my allowed budget.

Your knowledge and suggestions are appreciated.

Check out CarPoint.com.au
Several pop up there for good money every now and then. But be ready to pay a bit more than that.

thanks for the tip on car point, there's one for $17,500 that looks the goods, problem is the changeover, and have to sell the Pulsar first. Which means Gwendolyn gets pressed into daily service for a while!! Shortly to find out whether wife was really really serious.

its almost impossible to get a really good one, they usually are always bogged or dodgy in the sills or floors etc, unless u are very lucky and find one which has been restored properly but i doubt you will find one cheap, good luck with the search, make sure u look at it thoroughly

has she ever been in one? Low seating position, drafty roof and door seals, little power, etc etc is totally unlike a Pulsar...

Fortunately she has driven Gwendolyn (my 74 L Bug) often enough to have some idea of what she would be getting herself into.

To be honest driving an L Bug and driving a KG is like comparing chalk and cheese. Having owned and driven both i know first hand. I highly suggest she drives one first, as alot of people (including my partner who has owned everything VW) didn't like the driving position of the KG and wouldn't own one again he reckons. We sold ours as it needed more work and money thrown into than we could afford with buying our house.
If you want something half decent expect to pay around the $15k mark, and remember, repairs to a KG aren't easy due to their coach built once piece body...

Hi there I brought my for $8k all looked good but found out it needed lots of work and another $6k but now its almost finished. A guy from Shanons checked it out the other day and estimated that they would insure it for around $22k so I am happy. We only did a rolling resto.

Keep it LHD, more fun. Good luck picking up a KG for under 10k, you'll need it.

I sold mine for 20k 12mths ago and that was for a quick sale. Just remember you get what you pay for, but the odd bargain does pop up from time to time.

good luck with the hunt.

Hey gellecan, can I ask what was wrong with that black one? I have felt bitterly disappointed for the last few weeks after having missed out on that car. It might make me feel a bit better to know what problems it had!

Many thanks. That's made me feel a little better about it. Still looking for something in the same price range as Gwendolyns master. Cheers.
