Waving
Just thought I'd throw this out. I know if you are driving down the road in a Kombi and you pass another Kombi then you will (usually, not all
the time) wave to each other.
My question is, why doesn't anyone else wave?? or do I just drive around in the wrong area?? I have been giving a little wave to all the
VW's I pass but they don't wave back. Meh?? |

oh other Kombi's will often wave back (provided I am in the Kombi)
Why doesn't anyone wave to Bugs or any other type of VW though? and why don't Kombi's wave to me when I'm in the Bug?? |

Hey, isn't it cool when you keep crossing each other paths and you sort of get to know them in a distant sort of way
I have 4 regulate VW in my car park at the station. Only ever see the driver of the golf, and he caught to same early train as me on Tuesday. Spooky
but way cool

Waving.
I love waving to other VW drivers. Any type will do. Been going to the Gym in the mornings to strengthen my wave and get the whole "How ya
doin?" technique right before Nambucca. I sorted the "So ya gonna pass me" wave on my way along the freeway to the Nats over the Easter
Hols.
You know there a fanatic hey Taz when you see them waving to Type 3's.
The Bronzes Observations-
General rule is Kombi's wave to Kombis, Beetles wave to beetles. Drivers closer to the 30-40 age bracket tend to wave the most regardless of
gender. Young VW drivers are too cool to wave, especially the boys - older drivers are to tired and generally only respond to a wave and hardly ever
instigate the wave. A shame really. I've never been in NB so don't know the protocol - Help us out Andrew. Found the Kombi drivers are more
fanatical wavers than Beetle drivers. Beetle drivers do the cool one finder rise wave - kombi drivers carry teams of cheer squads laced with alcohol
in the back ready to pounce on the horn, light and windscrrn on approach of anything VW. The more pissed they get the more selective they become.
Found this out on the way back from Festivals and Carnivals a Kombi owning friend and I used to go to.
Strangely enough few VW drivers wave to Baja's. I don't know if its indifference, disgust or jealiousness. I get more waves from 4WD owners
than fellow VW drivers. Especially when there bogged!

the time too. Just fickled:sandrine
It depends on the audience as to what sort of wave I give

I actually had a wave from a kombi today, i got so exited i had to race home and post it. There seems to be a snobbery factor from kombi drivers.
I remember as far back as the 70's kombi drivers waved at kombi drivers. thought it was real strange as a young lad.
if you want everyone to wave at you go for a drive way out west.
New beetles are just that, new and catering to a different market, its jus ta trendy car to most of them. |

I always wave to other beetles, and if im near them i'll probably honk my horn as well whenever i wave to kombis they seem not to wave back, which is a shame because they are usually full of people who look
interesting and i dont bother with new beetle drivers unless they wave
first... which they seldom ever do. I also wave to type 3 drivers (whenever i see them, but there isnt that many)
i think more people should wave. just shows you are keeping your eyes on the road... even if it is on the other side to the one you should be
looking at!!

I'm an avid waver with good response I usualy get a wave back, but I do stand out in the crowd.
I wave to anycar the same as Im driving whether it be Mazda, Toyota whatever, as long as its the same model and colour as me, as its ofen a real laugh
all vws get the wave when in Herbie Unless I'm distracted or concerntrating etc.
But I have given up doing it in my white Ford Econovan, its pointless and tiring.
Sometimes I even get a message on here that says "saw you today"
I think waving is good eticet and brings cheer to the road, as motoring today has become very boring with cars today being far removed from the spirit
of traditional motoring with the wind in your hair and the adventure underway.
Cheers Tony

I was going to post above but forgot amongst my ramble - I'd like to get those 70's hands on a spring. You know the ones with a suction cap
that sticks for two tears at a time until the kids get to it and stuff it. One of those would be cool stuck on the back window but I've never
seen them sale for the longest time.
.. and no I'm not getting the pnumatic 'Brown Eye' guy or the dog or cat with the bobbing head!

I wave to any VW.... if I see it. Unfortunately the late model VWs just don't seem to stand out in the crowd like the older ones do.
I also get quite disheartened by the VW owners who just bought 'a car', rather than 'a VW'. These people just look at me like
I'm crazy. It tends to be the younger drivers and the owners of later model VWs. Kombi owners nearly always wave back though, unless I'm
driving the bug.

Driver looked at me as though I was some crazy woman.

I'll tend to wave to all air-cooled VW's [no disrespect to NB and Golf owners - not all of them are enthusiasts], however I get lots of
funny looks when I forget what car I'm driving, and realise that I'm not in the VW!

:sandrine
I wave to all VW's, I try & be socialable.
Down here we have more Kombi's than
Bugs but I wave to all.
Some wave some don't - I don't care I still wave.
Always when passing schools you can hear "Punch Buggy" yelled & then kids
punching each other up....Where did that come from?
Then you get people just staring at your Bug as you drive by....I just smile & I always get a nice smile back.
Thats the best feeling....

Too many bug people (not the ones here) only have one coz "its cute" (NOT THE ONES HERE) and so many later model kombies just drive it coz
itsa cheap...I once even couldnt get a splity to wave, iwas flashing and honking (a klaxon) arm out the window...Nuttn...it has happened twice with
the same van...they live in Sth melb..you know who u are...I was going to turn around i tell ya...
I think it is the like waves to like...but vw lovers woul be the deciding factor....I have wavwed when in a SECA and get funny looks....Oh and there
was a 66' splity I pulled upto at the lights next to in Fitzroy, and she seemed she could give a shit that a same yr splity was next to her...I
fained an invite to drag and she looked all, "I dont think so"at me...perhaps it should be in the ownership contract that you must
wave....lol:thumb

i will stick the hand out the front window to all aircooled vw. will most times get a wave back. remember once we were travelling down the highway
back to sydney and another split was heading north. every one waved at every one else with both hands we were that excited. almost ran off the road.
you dont pass alot of splits so you tend to get a little over excited. i find old people in beetles generally dont way back. wierd...

On the subject of waving, well moreso the "punch buggy"...
I was on my way to the aquarium to pick up some fish bits and passed two cyclists, the one up the back yelled "punch buggy" to the one up
the front, who then started laughing when he saw what he got yelled at for!! I just had to slow down and give them a thumbs up! :thumb |
