good question.... anyone want to start with 63 and work thru... pics would be great too...
my half of the qyestion - what years did salt 'n' pepper start and run thru to...? and was it avail in all three body shapes?
what about centre arm rests in the rear seats notch and fasty only? what years?
make it a sticky thread...!

Whatnow! You'll have "the box drivers" having a go at you for calling Type 3 vehicles T3. Seems that confuses others as the T3 is their later Kombi
vans.
Until 1966 (well, August 65!!!) there was only two body styles!
Up to and including 63 Notch and Square (German built imported model) had the cloth/vinyl seat covering in the sort of salt and pepper. Dash was the
wrap-around style blending with door upper trim. Door trim was vinyl upper with same cloth lower and Z armrests. Light/wiper/washer switch was
pushbutton type. Locking steering column.
64 model started local production with salt and pepper full vinyl seats and matching door trim. Only the small armrest. Dash not wrap-around. Early
dash to about mid year had a black plastic fill strip to blank the slot for pushbutton switch. Two seperate switches now for wipers and lights.
Simple dangling ignition switch without locking steering.
64 1500S (German built) Generally seemed to have a vinyl seat covering, two piece door trims with Z armrests. Wrap-around dash, up to about mid year
pushbutton light switch then as 64 N with seperate switches. Locking steering/ignition switch. Side and centre armrests in back.
65.. Maybe some left over salt and pepper but generally one colour seats on the N as was the locally produced "S" one colour seats/door trims. Same
dash as 64.
66 (I think!) was the intro of the rolled top front seats and the intro of the Fastback. The fastback returned to the Z armrests.
67 was about the same as the 66.
Only 68 and 69 left. After that they ruined the shape Now that'll
start something.
Well there's a start!!

Got all the other mechanical and technical changes, but I'd be typing for weeks........

Quite a few familiar changes noted here in June 63 must have been for the start of OZ production of the N!
The dipper switch on the firewall was a pain to use and wasn't on many vehicles. Lucky they moved the button back to the indicator stalk.
Was a neat way they deleted the seat backrest locking. Leave the cables out and bend the hook out of the way. Hard braking or accidents saw the rear
seat passengers squash the front ones against the dash! Remember! No seat belts fitted standard in those days.

That's right. All the 63 models were imported and had the cloth seats. The above info looks like it was getting ready for the cheapie 64 and on
models to be produced here in OZ. I had an after June part of 64 model which had the dipper switch on the indicator but a mates from the earlier
part of 64 had it on the firewall. That seemed to be the only difference in the two vehicles. Both of us converted the N engine to S but in reality
it was only adding the twin carbs. OZ S engines had the 7.8:1 CR as did the N. The earlier design steering lock/ignition switch column was much
better and continued on to about 67 in Germany etc. There were some fully imported Fastbacks which had the this column but most were the locally
assembled cheapie version.

My 68 has a plain light blue (I think) vinyl interior and currently no carpet. There was black carpet.
Small beetle armrests in front and no rear arm rest.
Standard Australian dash crack 1" wide.
Blotchy white headlining.

Can't remember where I got the number. It was just on the computer from long ago where I got it from somewhere/someone. I wasn't sure if they did
use the dished pistons on the S back then as well. The old PMG Kombis with the 1500 engine had the dished ones from memory. The usual thing to do
here in OZ was change the domed 8.5:1 CR pistons on the "real S" to the flat top ones due to heat problems. It didn't effect too many engines as
there was only a handfull of the 1500S ever in Australia.
Do you know what monthh/year the OZ 1500S hit the showrooms. As far as I can remember it is only listed as a 1965 but did it come out in August 1964
which was a year after the German version appeared (around August 1963).
A good history post on Type 3s. Let's keep it going!

Must have only run for about 6 months as the 1600 range started in late 65 (66 model). Any record of how many OZ 1500S Notches were produced at
Clayton?

October 68 would have been the 69 model year so that would have been the last of the good shape bodies. 1600 Type 3s were at least assembled here long before that.
What do you know about the story that VW of Aust couldn't produce enough Fastbacks around 66- 67 so Lanock Motors imported their own supply from
Germany. These were the ones with the locking steering column. I only ever saw a few of them. The last one was a wreck in the wrecking yard at
Waterview Heights near Grafton back in the earlier 90s.

Was replacing the fuel lines today on my 65 1500S and I saw a pressed metal tag on the engine next to the crankcase breather reading 'M249 90
OKTAN'
Did Aussie produced 65 1500S's have pop outs? Mine has

No. Your car had the popouts fitted by the person who restored it years ago. Noticed your other post elsewhere so yes it was Mike Waldron who fitted
the popouts.

spot on with the data 1500S and IN2VWS!!! The M249 tags were also only on the imported engines so the motor in that blue notch is definitely a
replacement from way back, probably a warranty job. Easiest way to tell an imported 66 or 67 is the fact it is a 4 stud disc brake car and
1600.Clayton also did a first run of 63 model 1500 with cloth salt'n'pepper interior, z armrests, wrap around dash etc with the earliest I have seen
at chassis around 170000 through to 223000 ish. Earliest type 3 I have seen is in fact mine which comes in at 129530, was delivered to Lanock Motors ,
Five Dock Sydney in Late December 1962. The Type 3 was officially launched in March 1963. I bought it of an Old german bloke who moved to Adelaide
from Sydney and claimed the car was a special one for which I cannot find out anything else on the early history of it apart from the fact that it is
what it is! I have only seen traces of earlier cars, ie; engine with number 108000 ish, all unsalvageable wrecks in having their bones picked over!!
Anybody else out there with early,early cars?
