Normally when a type 3 engine case is used to build a bug style engine the upright fan shroud and inlet manifolds from another bug engine are used, so in effect the type3 engine becomes a type1 engine. The only tricky bit if the oil dip stick - there is no hole in that position on the case so a plastic fitting is bolted next to the oil pump to provide a dip stick hole.

But if the type 3 engine is left with it's fan on the rear of the crankshaft it would not fit in a bug without a lot of cutting of the rear valance - it's too long in it's original form.

If it is still in its pancake form and somehow fitted I would like to see how the tinware is sealing at the body, and how the fan is drawing clean cool air.

If it has been done then whoever did it has a lot of time on his hands. It would be far less effort to convert to upright.

I would doubt very much that it's a complete Type 3 engine, with Type 3 fam shrouding and tinware. It just wouldn't fit in a Beetle engine bay - the Type 3 engine package is wider and much more square at the rear. Beetle engine bays are curved at the rear.

Type 3 engines DO fit in early Kombi engine bays though. The shape is much more the same. Still some tinware snipping and heater box mods to make it fit though. That was a popular conversion for a few years in teh early '60s, when Kombis came with 1200 engines and Type 3s had 1500 engines. Once Kombis got 1500 and 1600 engines in the mid and late 60's, there was no point.

And, as I fopund out the hard way at rego time some years ago, the engien number is stamped on TOP of the T3 case, so is covered by the fan housing when converted to 'upright' T1 spec
