Whats the trick with painting panels and the holes for body trim?

Here is a trivial question I'd like to put out.

After I painted my bonnet (will be do it again later though ) the holes for the chrome trim and emblem had gotten smaller.

I ended up chipping the paint when putting the plugs in for the emblem.

What's the best way to avoid this next time? I used a drill bit by hand to lightly take off the paint in the holes, but I'm worried it may scratch it too far and expose some metal.

Thanks

Thats not rust, it's ah ... orange primer ... yep that's what it is ...

You could drill them back out just before the final colour is going on. This would eliminate the thickness of any puttys. Or drill them .2mm bigger before you start to allow for .1mm paint per side of the hole.

if your worried about about a little metal showing and having some rust show up you could spray the area with something like wurth cavity protection spray. put the trims on then wipe the area clean.

Drilling before the color coat sounds like the go.

Thanks fellas.
