Removing Bumpers, legal or not?
I am looking to restore a '75 Beetle I picked up, and am thinking of replacing the front and rear bumpers with chrome push bars, I live in
Queensland...
does anyone know if this is legal or not?

If you are talking about the chrome "t-bars", the answer is no. You will get hassled by the boys in blue with them.
Removing the bumpers on the other hand is not illegal. I've been running no bumpers for over a year and have never been pulled over.

You might get away with NO bumpers...
but anything protruding from a car that can hurt a pedestrian is illegal...
I prefer bumpers...
there have been locals driving around here without bumpers for many years... country town NSW
and many with the T bars...
When a car is registered in NSW and has to pass the roadworthy test each year...
it says - any protruding parts on the front of the vehicle- Yes / No
You can get alloy bumpers for the front and rear...
narrow ribbed little bumpers... for looks only... lol

Your bumpers won't hurt anyone Lee, but your array of spotlights might slice off a leg or three.

it all depends if the cop or inspector wants to make a prick of himself
i havent brushed up on my rules and regs lately but last time i did no bumpers were fine as long as there were no dangerous protruisions like T
bars
that said my rota bug had Tbars from when it was first built in 1988 uptill i bought it in 2000 altho it wasnt registered for a while in the late
90s
i ran Tbars on my Lbug a few months ago for a couple of weeks while i resprayed my bumpers
we went on a club run and got pulled up at a RBT cops didnt seem overly concernd
For ppls info tho eyebrows are considered a dangerous protrusion as well and are considered illegal
that was one thing ive been pinged for before

I think Joel is right re protrusions, but it also depends on the individuals attitude as well. I ran t-bars on my Ghia Looker, and got pulled up by
the cops in the 80's. They admired the car, ignored the t-bars, and instead asked me to remove my Cal plate that I was running under my NSW plate.

Thanks for the help guys, I might look at making up some custom bumpers for it, or fixing up the old ones... we'll see how it goes...

I'm sure that if you make replacement bumpers, that they must extend out to the sides as far as standard bumpers do.
This is certainly the case with buggies where there is no bodywork from the mudguards in front of the wheel.
What is boils down to is, if the car is fronted up to a wall the first part that touches the wall must be the bumper or the body work not the rubber
of the front tyres.
This is a very old regulation. Look at prewar cars. The bumper extends to the outside of the tyres.
