Bug A Pillar Advice

Hi all, I have to get the A pillars done on a bug and was after advice. I've read the sticky section on Helbus' repair and was after other advice. For example:

- can a rust repair be done OK with the body still on, or do we need to remove the body? I'd rather keep the body on.

- should we buy replacement sections from a company like cip1, or can you do as good a job with a bit of steel and a person who can weld well?

- I saw in the pics that there is wiring in one channel, is there anything else in either channel that we need to be careful of?

Any other advice appreciated, thanks!

You may be able to do the rust repair with the body on, it depends on whether the rust extends to the lower section of the channel. That is something that can only be seen with the body off the pan.

I made my sections from sheet metal. Anything can be made from flat sheet, it depends how skilled and patient you are. Buying the rust sections available is a much easier way to get a goo start on the shape. Be aware that it will not be perfect shape, and getting rust repair sections to fit is not like putting Lego blocks together. You will need skill and patience.

You will need to be aware of the wiring loom, and also be aware of the heater channel piping at the end. You will see what I mean once you cut it open. Also be aware that welding a panel in burns all protection that any metal has away. So once a new rust replacement section is welded in, the area will start rusting internally straight away, faster than it ever has. You will need to find a way to coat the inside of your repairs and welds.

Do a search for Fish Oil, or rustolene, or rust prevention. Heaps of info on products to prvent the quick return of rust.
