Tin Wear Qs

Will a fan shroud from a 1200cc fit the cylinder covers for a 16 twin?

cylinder covers ^^^^
and will the surrounding tinware (around the engine itself) fit a 1600cc twin port?

Nope - not without some pretty serious mods. Although the shroud will physically fit the cylinder tins OK, a 1600 has a different oil cooler setup that a non 1600 shroud won't fit over. (btw the 1600 oil cooler setup is known as a doghouse)

Front and rear tins are also different - there's a hole for ducting for the doghouse on the 1600 version, and also about 4 different versions of the different bits based on exhaust and crank pulley setup, air ducting etc.

Why do you want to do this - is it just to have the different look of the curved 36hp style shroud ??? If so you can buy aftermarket 36hp style shrouds that fit a doghouse and the standard 1600 cylinder tins...

Yea i saw them one cip1 i want to save as much money as possible (i'm a student and have no money) i'm looking at 1600 TP without tin ware, and i have a complete 1200 40horser thought that some of the tin ware might be interchangeable. I am however going to buy a new dog house, but wondering how much other tin ware i'll need for it to fit & cool right, and what i can take off the 1200

it would actually but whats stopping it is the oil cooler
u would have to either fit a single port oilcooler which is a massive step backwards or go with a remote cooler

dads motor is setup like that

36hp 1200 shroud on a 1600 twinport just with the doghouse cooler removed and the flange tapped for hose fittings

NOPE

Best to find good used VW tinware..

a lot of this new stuff doesn't fit too well...

You can pick up used tinware very easily and cheaply...
as it was on every engine.. lol

cheers

Oh cool, thanks guys. I've just found out that the 1200 i have is a "late" 1200, and that it would fit the dog house and fit onto a 1600, cool huh, well thats what my mechanic told me.
my question now is: will that "later" 1200 tin ware (namely the cylinder covers) fit or are worth modifying to fit the twin port inlet manifolds?

NOPE

remember the tinware is there to cool the engine...
You need to have all the correct pieces...
NO leakage....

there would be 1600 tinware stacked up at some VW enthusists place.... rusting away....

there must be someone on here that has tinware they don't want as they replaced it with chromed or custom tinware....
