just bought my first type 3

just thought id show some pics of the squareback i bought on the weekend and get your thoughts and ideas. the lady i got it from has had it since new and its only done 74000 miles. The original idea was to rat it but i am rethinking that. not sure what to do.
first thing i have to do is get it on the road as it will be the wifes daily driver. someone has snapped off both mirrors so if anyone has some, would be greatly appreciated", or can i use beetle ones. also gonna need a repair manual (big time)my contact details are in the buying/ selling section under "wanted to buy type 3 mirrors
noticed on the engine, there is a cover missing in the bottom left hand corner. is that important?????
cheers don

Hey donovan,

Welcome to the type 3 world. Nice square - looks pretty straight and tidy :tu:

The cover you are missing is somewhat important i guess as the engine / cooling system will be sucking in warm air from the engine bay, rather than the cool air coming in through the vents on the side of the car and down through the large black bellows that you can see goes onto the back of the engine.

A replacement cover shouldnt be too hard to score from the folk on here, and same goes for your mirrors.

Good luck!

first thing I would do is get a badge for the bonnet. Looks naked without it.

Good score

nice score man. yeah i would drop it and put some nice wheels on it

yeah definitely get a cover for the fan shroud - engine will run hot without it.

just noticed the engine rear mount hanger is not there! what the heck is holding the engine at the back then??? :dork:

also where abouts are you located?
congrats

looks like my wife is not too keen on it so its mine to do what i want with.
I am liking the panel van look on the cover of the new vwma. match the new panels to the faded paint, some old looking sign writing, (for my business)
low with sexy wheels. or might forget the panel van bit. decisions decisions????? I am on the sunshine coast. not too many type 3s going around up here

Congrats on your purchase, looks tip-top. From one squareback owner to another grab yourself a copy of John Muir's "How to keep your Volkswagen alive" it's been my saving grace in moments of uncertainty.:)

please forgive my ignorance. I thought the rear engine mount was always on the round bit pertruding of the fan housing... it must be different for late type 3's then?

no worries izac, had me worried for a bit there mate.. grabbed the manual and raced outside to check a soon as
i saw your message. on a 72 there appears to be two engine mounts, one either side.
i would like to keep the miles pretty low on her, so i will only use it for work when my kombi is off the road (rust repairs).
I like the height of yours, and by the looks of the youtube video,it doesnt look too hard. how low did you go?

The one on the fan housing was there for the swing axle bodies only. It was left on the later engines but wasn't connected to anything on the body. Doesn't need to be there at all.

If you you are going to buy a factory workshop manual for the car try to get the Blue Bentley, the Brown Bentley DOES NOT COVER Carburettors only fuel injection.
