Gearbox code help
I have a 1965 beetle and I'm wondering if anyone can help me with gearbox numbers. I've searched everywhere on the net but they come up with letters
in the code, which I don't have.
My gearbox number is 7903204

I have done similar searches and come up wit nothing.
I think that a pre 66 bentley manual reprint may have some info,
because those numbers are more like and engine number.
But at over $200 it is on the end of a long list of teats I have to buy.
But I hav kept notes of all the boxes codes I have seen and heres what I have in my notes.
All the boxes that have that 7 series code had a curved clutch arm, usually with a circlip retaining it instead of the pre-65 pinch bolt.
Most had no seal in the nose cone where the hockey stick comes out,
but late in that series(late 65?) there were some that had a seal,
and also a plug where the "future" reverse light swith may go.
Most will have a Gleason 4.375 crownwheel ratio, with only 6 bolts, tie-wired on.
In late 1966 the VW factory in Australi a began making an 8-bolt crownwheel with the same 4.375 ratio, but on a Oerlikon machine.
While it had smaller teeth, it was a much better tooth formby design.
They should have the following ratios:
First 3.80,
Second,
2.0588
third, 1.3182
and 4th should be 0.889 with a key on its bore
instead of a spline that later gears in the late sixties.
That model box will have steel 4mm shift forks,
but weak first gear that uses a NLA synchro cone(other than NOS).
